Cool You've got to hate a talking diesel!!

Today's world is hurting, but it's really getting bad when you're looking a new truck and the diesel.... interrupts and say's "I'll get you 20 MPG". You have to hate it when a diesel overstate their mileage completely. jut playing...... I appreciate all the posts and comments.

I'm still undecided. I know the smart thing to do is keep the F150 and pay it off. Someone asked if I was upside down on the loan. Actually I owe about $8400.00 it's bluebook is about $19500.00. The dealers have offered $13800.00 on a trade, but I usually sell on my own. It can be a MAJOR pain, but usually pays off in the end.

Thanks for all the input!!

FISH ON!!!!

Hey Rich,

Yeah I think you have a good idea by selling it yourself. If it takes you six months and you get what you want for it, then thats more money on a new rig since you have been paying it off the whole time too.

Good luck with the truck hunting and let us know.

My quick 2 cents.

Until your kids are 6'4", you don't need the crew cab. A supercab will fit kids up to 5 foot and change.

If the truck is running fine now, pay it off and then run it another year ot two while saving your money for the F250 you really want, but can't really afford right now.

Talking J-150

J-150,
that is the smartest thing I've heard so far. As much as I'd like to be driving a new F250, it doesn't make smart sense!! I just spent 3-4 hours driving new and used and it's a lost cause. The 2000, V10 I was looking at for $23,699 was just too beat up. It didn't even have running boards on it. Evertyhing else was $450.00-$750.00 a month. It's funny, they don't want to give you their best price....... they want to meet your payment. I'm comparing everything to the $32,898.00 Brand New 2002, XLT, Crew cab, 4x4, diesel.

Does anyone know of where a good web page auto payment calculator is? I need to run the numbers and see exactly what I can afford?

Thanks again,
Rich

You can get a Brand New 2002, XLT, Crew cab, 4x4, diesel for $32,898?!?

My truck stickered at only $500 less than that -- and I surely would have bought the diesel at that price.

Y2K.......

Yes, there were three trucks on ad for this price. I went down and test drove one, but as I've mentioned several times... I CAN'T AFFORD A $33,000.00 TRUCK!! I was laid-off in October and I've since started my own business, but things have been on the slow side. I install and sell Norstar Phone and Voicemail Business Systems. With the economy the way it is can make for some tough times. I'm sure it has affected most of us.

I'm going to keep my ears open, but I think I'm going to take J-150's advice and concentrate on paying my truck off. I wouldn't know how to act not having a truck payment? LOL

I appreciate all the comments......

Have a nice day.

Who CAN afford a truck like that?!? Most of us make outrageous payments and whine about the gas mileage.

That's why "Nick" is likely to be in my garage for a long long time (as long as the plugs don't blow out, the heads don't spring a leak, the tierod ends don't put me into a wall, and the tranny doesn't quit keepin on).

Geez, and I left GMC's for Fords.

Well, I don't know what FORD claims for their diesel's fuel mileage...haven't looked. But I know ppl with powerstrokes who get 18-22 m.p.g. I only get 14 m.p.g. with my 5.4 gas engine and the powersroke will outlast my engine, pull more than my engine and with a Banks Power Kit, outrun me off the line. A friend who has a '99 F-250 PSD SC has run me a few times (stoplight races) and I didn't exactly run off and leave him. Both trucks being stock at the time.

I wish I could afford to trade for the 250 PSD. I would have one right now if I could. it's hard to beat the PSD, except for maintenance costs (which are more than made up for in fuel mileage).

If I came across a fantastic deal like that (new F-250 4x4 crew cab diesel for only $33k) I would trade in a skinny minute, as long as it wasn't black. That price sounds too good to be true! They sticker for $40k-$42k!!!!

Yes, it's a great price.

RebelYell, yes your are correct. The trucks that were on ad for $32,898.00 had sticker prices for almost $40,000.00. I took the ad to a couple dealers closer to my house and they wouldn't touch the price. The next week, the same dealer had the same truck with the Lariat package for $1000.00 more. Yes, you read that right....... a 2002 F250, Lariat, 4x4, crew cab, diesel for $33,999.00. I wish I could of found a way to afford it, but it's just not a smart move right now.

Ive found a couple 99's and a few 2000 trucks, but they still want about $30,000-32,000.00.

Thanks...... FISH ON!! The salmon are running in the Sacramento river.

That sounds like a great deal! Over $1k less than xplan. Wish I lived closer to CA.

I stopped at a local dealer yesterday and was shown an xplan price of $36,600 on truck that had a sticker of 41,700. It had everything I wanted except for the limited slip rear-end. Who in the hell gets a 4x4 w/o a LS???

Maybe if they still have the truck on their lot for another month I can get it for less than that and not have to use my pin. Which would mean I could also use my alumni discount.

Hi Rich

You might like to look at www.joneswestford

Their in Reno, Nv. They still have some new PSD in stock. Havent seen alot for resale(in paper) Also internet auto in Reno always has some late model diesels. Sometimes they have V10s. They have very good prices, both places.

PSD is the big seller thats for sure.

Just for info...my last ride was F250 HD with the 460cid and 5sp..the V10 replaced 460...best mpg (solo) 12...fully loaded 8800# GVWR 8.5mpg. Also trying thru mods. for better mpg wasnt worth it. New V10 seems better on mpg. These trucks arent mpg vehicles...thats why they make 4cyl. engines etc

Im also doing some thinking. PSD/V10 Just do the math and what works for you. Compare ALL costs to operate PDS/V10. New/Used. More mpg. with the PSD is a plus for sure..because of the higher cost of engine etc..if you drive it ALOT you could get a payback quicker. But...theres alot more expense and things to be really aware of with the diesel.

Good luck...OT

i have friends with both engines and the diesel gets better mpg hands down. at least 3-4 mile per gallon. the diesel gas around here is cheaper than regular gas. that is a great deal, i just priced one with a xplan price of 34410, had everything but the l/s.

still looking for the right one tho.

I am so surprised to read that the Diesel is getting better mileage than the gas V10. I need to check that out.

Surely that wasn’t a serious statement! If so, then you are seriously misinformed in regards to diesel engines. Fuel mileage is the one of the main things diesels do much better than gasers. A diesel engine is much more efficient than a gasser. When comparing apples to apples a diesel should do around 5 mpg better than it’s gasser counterpart and that’s pretty much what mine does. That is why you see so many of them in Europe where fuel costs are about 4 times higher than they are here.

I can tell you that I hand calculate and log every tank of fuel I run through my truck. Pulling a 9,000 lb 5er she will get anywhere from10 mpg with high winds and / or mountains on up to 13 mpg on fairly level roads. Unloaded she will do just a tad over 20 mpg if I keep the tach under 2,000 rpms. Running 75 to 80 mph which is about 2,200 on the tach she will do about 18 mpg. There is no V-10 or 5.4 in the world that will do that!
Maintaince on a diesel is not that big a deal if you change your own oil. Which I do.
But, in regards to fuel mileage with a diesel. It does seem to vary quite a bit and sometimes with the same types of truck. But you also have to realize that a Dooley with 4.10 gears is not going to get the mileage of a srw with 3.73’s. Once you exceed 2,000 rpms the mileage really suffers. Plus the fact that some trucks have air leaks in the fuel system that kills mileage.

By the way, I also own a V-10 in an Excursion. The break in was a little rough on fuel but now she has done a best of 15.3 mpg all hwy and averages around 12 to 13 mpg in town. Combined she runs around 14 mpg. We’re quite happy with the V-10. My experience with our V-10 is the main reason you couldn’t give me a 5.4 in a Superduty. The fuel mileage is just too close and the V-10 has WAY MORE POWER. And for only about $600 more.

As much as I like my diesel, if I wasn't pulling heavy, I would have a V-10 in my truck as well.
