I just purchased a 03 4x4 supercrew V10.with shift on the fly. the locking hubs now say, lock and auto. all the other trucks Ive seen say lock and unlock. even my salesman says he's not sure what this means. in the owners manual that came with the truck only talks about lock and unlock. My question is are these really
auto locking hubs on a 3/4 ton?

There are (have always been since 99) 2 options for front hubs on the Superduty.
Manual: which are traditional hubs that your used to. These are the hubs you get if you have the floor mounted 4x4 shifter as well. These hubs have lock/unlock..

Auto: These hubs have 2 settings. Lock, and Auto.. The 'lock' mode is mostly just there as a fail-safe in case the 'auto' does not work..
When you switch into 4x4 (on the dashboard switch), the front hubs will automatically lock, in addition to the x-fer case delivering power to the front diff.
