How long does it take for a truck frame to get weak?

I have a dumb and weird question for you guys. After about how many years does it take to weaken a truck frame where it's not as strong as when brand new?? I looked under a used truck I brought "2002" and saw a lot of rust on the frame, and was curious on how much rust will weaken a frame if any??? Any information would be great!!

Once you buy it, the truck might as well be soaked in muriatic acid. I'd give it about 6 months before it breaks in half.

Deep rust may weaken it but surface rust shouldn't. If the truck was a work truck and was used hard towing and hauling a big trailer it may weaken it over years. an accident may also weaken it. I have only ever seen a frame broken once.

ohhh boy! You know what?? Knowing my luck, that might even happen to me! j/k!!

Seriously though, do frames ever get weak? if so? how many years down the road? or how much rust does it take to weaken them??

Do frames acually brake in half?? (just curious??)

My Dad had a 66 Chevy C10 that the left side of the frame right behind the cab broke apart in 1973.

If could happen, but if it were a big issue under normal use there wouldn't be so many 50+ year old vehicles. Especially when quite often, the frame is the only thing unchanged from the original vehicle...

Our 66 F250 seems plenty strong.

so pretty much, I don't have to worry at all anytime soon about the frame getting weak for a 3 year old truck? I was wondering if I should get the bottom rust proofed to be on a safe side....what do you guys thing about that?? good or a bad idea??

On my 69' F100 I had as my first truck when I was 16 I think they forgot to install the cab mounts on it. When I got it then the front of the cab was held up by the steering shaft and the rear was mysteriously suspended. 2 hours with a skill saw, bench vise, welder and grinder I made some out of a piece of scrap 1/4" plate dad had laying around. I bet they outlast the truck now!

i had the cab mounts on a '69 F-100 do the same thing(steering shaft)
it eventually sawed the shaft in half...the shaft snapped right as i pulled into where we used to practice(band)
no kidding
