However, I can't speak with regard to snow. If snow accumulates on the dish (I'd imagine it would be hard depending on the angle of the dish) i guess it could cause interference. People with sat. tv who live in snow areas can answer that better than I.

Edit: also rose.... i DID have direcTV one time before this which was like 8 years ago(it was actually Primestar but direcTV bought them out and we changed to DirecTV satelite equipment).... and NEVER had problems with it when it rained. I'm pretty PO'd that when i had recently got it that it did this, But im sure if you get direcTV it will work perfect for you. The only problem youll have is taking it off Discovery channel. When thats in pure digital format its adictive

Wow Rose, that picture is like a post card. Man I miss the mountains!
I've had both Direct TV and Dish Network. I've had much better customer service from Dish Network. However, they both scramble in a heavy rain storm.
I have Dish Net now, and wouldn't go back to any other service provider.
Good luck.

I had Dish a few years ago, now DirecTV. My mai nreason for switching was to get a better receiver, which was cheaper to get being a new customer than a current one.
I recommend getting the professional installation if it does not cost much. They have the tools to get the highest signal strength. If you go with DirecTV, get the triple LNB oval dish. You may not care about high def now, but you will before you need a new dish. Besides, they are free anyway.
I think I ordered from Expert Satellite, but Rapid Satellite is also good. I also highly recommend DVR from either company. I love my Tivo!

We have DirecTV, it took me awhile to get over losing my cable, but I managed. Having so many more channels is nice. We lose the signal during very heavy rains, but that's it. The only thing I don't care for is that I can't order individual channels, I want the Outdoors Channel, but they won't let me order just that one.

I have Direct TV with Tivo. Tivo rules!!!!!!!!!!!! But enough of Tivo before I start sounding like those pathetic paid advertisements for it, again.
Occasionally we have had problems getting a signal with DirectTV during big thunderstorms. Not that common though.
The box in my room needed to be reset frequently and would not display some channels at all or real choppy. Non of the other boxes in the house had that issue though. When I got the Tivo box the issue went away.
The only other problem, is our house got hit with an electrical surge or lighting. Not sure which. Killed 1 cable box and DirectTV didn't work for the whole house. Tech support was out withing 3 days.
They replaced the splitter, no signal. They replaced the LNB, no signal. They replaced the Dish, boom better signal. Only cost $70 to fix it.
On a side note, DirectTV is joining forces with XM:
