Sorry Smeezy, sports channels are something I should add to the "Things they should get rid of:" thread. I am not a fan of sports, although I will watch the Lumberjack Competitions!!

OK guys, call me an idiot but what the heck is this Tivo thing y'all are so hot about?

TIVO enables you to record your favorite shows even when you arent home..... if you see something ur watching and you want to save it, You can click to record it, You can also Pause live Tv, or rewind live TV for instance

Lets say you pause a TV show, get up go do something and come back an hour later.... You press play and watch it, ut oh its commercial time! because the show is already over and u were gone for an hour you can fast forward pass the commercials and then press play when the show comes back on...

Also, theres a feature where you can Record an entire SERIES of shows, Lets say your favorite show is Survivor(using it as an exmaple chicks seem to like it for some reason) You can click on the series manager and choose to record all, So everytime that show comes on that channel you can record it, You will be able to record a total of 40hours worth of shows, Delete what you dont want, Keep what you want, etc etc.... Goto like bestbuy.com and do a search for tivo and it will explain, Another cool feature is if you arent at home but a show is coming on that u want to record. You can log onto tivo's website, login and tell it which show to record and it will!!! because Tivo is connected to your phone line. it will update once a night(updating TV show list for the day) and will only dial out when the phone isnt in use.

Well karen how did you make out with the sat?? I have direct tv and you should get it to if you have not done so already. Get just what you want from them they have many different packages available. I cannot get cable here as well being in the boonies but i have had direct tv for at least 8 years and the only time it goes out is during a huge snow or rain storm. Think of it as a early warning weather system, when it begins to freeze up close up everything and hold on tight... Good luck. Oh and they install it free for as many as 4 rooms.

Actually Tivo sounds like something I really have no use for. I have a VCR I can program to record shows if I can't be there to watch and I haven't programmed it in years so apparently I don't need that option! But thanks for the info SuperCab

Jim, haven't got it yet, probably call within the next week or so. Just trying to see which one is more worth the moola.

Uh-oh, I guess I get the odd looks and the freak nametag! While I don't have anything against cool electronics, there are just a bunch of things out there I don't have a use for.

I've had Direct TV for around 5 years. Got it for the NHL Center Ice package. Other than losing the signal during heavy rain, no problems over that time. The signal comes back up by itself after the storm passes (note: it rain between you and the signal not necessarily locally). I guess that problem would be reduced/eliminated if I upgraded to a 24 or 36 inch dish. No problems with Customer Service either, but I have only called them 3 times.

Some updates on what the others have said. DirecTV has now come out with their own version of TiVo. They will no longer sell TiVo, but those of us who already have it, will keep it, at least for a while. The charges for TiVo are just a monthly charge for the equipment. $4.99. If you have more than one recorder, I believe the charge is still only $4.99.
As for HDTV, if you decide to get it, DirecTV is coming out with a new receiver and dish due to the change over to mpeg4 compression, and getting the reception from the new satellites they just launched and are going to launch. They have annouced that those of us who already have HDTV receivers will get a free replacemnt from them. Haven't heard anything about a new dish. I hope so. As I get the Washington DC locals, I would get them in HD. I don't know what their schedule is for transmitting all locals in HD. I think right now, they are still selling the old HD receivers, although those may be programmable for the new set up.
Also they are changing from the Music Channels music service to XM satellite channels in November. More music channels than we had before.
I do get rain fade occasionly, when I have severe thunderstorms over or south of me, but as I turn everything off during a storm, it's no big deal.
For ice and snow, I have kept my dish low enough that I can hit it with warm water from a garden sprayer when it gets snow covered or iced up. That way I don't have a problem with accidently knocking it out of alignment with a broom of whatever I would use to brush it off. Not that it is easily knocked out, but you don't know my luck with that kind of stuff.
Whatever you decide, I think you will enjoy it, and you will find the picture quality better than the old copper cable cable TV. In my area it is cheaper with more channels than cable.

Do you have an announcement from DirecTV stating that they will give us HD receiver owners a new one for free?

I haven't seen it on the DirecTV web site yet, but it was listed in my November issue of Satellite Direct. Also I had this info some months ago from my local dealer (mom and pop) that had received the info from the DirecTV rep at the regional electronics show for dealers. If you get Satellite Direct or have access to one, it is on page 12 of the November issue. Timing of this will probably depend on what local channels you receive. The first markets to change over are, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, San Francisco, Dallas, Washington DC, Atlanta, Detroit, Houston, and Tampa Bay.
One note, I believe you already have to have an HD receiver to get the free upgrade.

Also in the issue, they talk about the new DVR setup. It will probably be $5.99 a month. The system they are selling will be able to record up to 100 hrs, compared to TiVo's 40.

I have had DirecTV since the year they launched it. Paid thru the nose as an early adopter. My original RCA receiver was $799! Now you can get the new version of it for $39 (or free if you are a new subscriber!) I have a DirecTivo and love it. Tivo definitely changes the way you watch TV.

With my original dish I hardly ever got rain fade, only in severe storms. I installed that one myself and was **** about aiming it for signal strength. My Direcway dish was clearly not aimed as well for TV. Our rain fade issues increased even though the dish is 36"! I think they optimized it for internet. I am now using cable internet because DirecWay was too slow. It beat the hell out of our dial up but as soon as cable moved in I grabbed it and killed Direcway. I have a Phase III oval dish but have not had time to hang it. When I do I will aim it as well as I did the old round one. I need to pull the big Direcway beast of the roof.
