Jarhead

$3.70 for a medium Coke. I couldn't find it in my soul to shell out another $4 for a bag of stale popcorn. But I did enjoy the movie, especially seeing as how it's the first time in over 5 years that I've seen a movie in a theatre.
Kinda strange how it wasn't really an 'action' movie. It seemed to highlight a lot of instances showing the pointlessness of the mission of the main characters. By the end of the flick I realized that they had managed to get inside my head.

I saw it an enjoyed it.
Judging by the comments on the book, it didn’t follow that at all. Swafford, wasn't that bad in the movie save for his little episode with his M-16, but who doesn't have a bad day. Since, I follow politics a bit I found it a little politically swayed, but just a hint. I will stick with my original statement being that this will help recruiting, especially cawky punks that have an inferiority complex. Worth the 8 bucks!

However, since I have offended all you former and current Marines, let me say 'sorry and thank you for your service'. Therefore any of you 'Semper Fi!' Marines that never once bagged on another American services (including reservist and national guardsmen), either jokingly or seriously, please PM/email me and I will give you my address so you can 'whoop my ****'
Otherwise please understand it is all inter-service fun and even though we sometimes say crazy things about each other, we still love each other (especially on a two way range).

I am bringing this thread back to life, cause it's my turn to give my 2 cents on this movie.
First of all, it brought back tons of memories. A lot of the crap that platoon did was stuff we did when I went through. I have noticed the Corps has gone through changes over the years, and this time frame was pretty much exactly what I experienced. IMO, this movie was basically for those who have some experience with what was shown in the movie. My wife watched it with me, and there were some things she didn't understand. Not what you saw, but what they "Marines" in the movie were feeling inside. I don't think it's fair to review this movie, and not know the small details of it.
bigtruck,
Your at Camp Pen, right? I was at San Mateo my last 2 years in. I have some good memories from that place. Training was brutal sometimes, but at the same time, it was fun.
First SGT Hill....What a bisch. I don't remember what I did, but our company Gunny had me climb to the top and pick him a flower. Well, there is a fire break at the top, and no flowers. I looked everywhere, and couldn't find one. I could have picked a flower from anywhere, but where is the integrity in that? I went back down and reported there is no flowers. He sent me back up with my pack, a sand bag, and my etool, to dig a 60 pit.
Man, that was fun.

That is a true statement for some people. Some seem to understand the mind games, take it with a grain of salt, and learn from it.

I'm not saying they come out bad... just not the same as they go in. You have to change if you want to improve your chances of surviving on the battle field.
Someone like me would only make it on luck. I prefer our boys have some skill they can use.

Oh, hell, I hear ya Matt.
I'm a completely different person now. I carry myself differently..I talk differently..I am a very blunt person...and I will speak my mind...Oh, and wont take chit from anyone.
Before that, I was a very passive, very quiet guy.
NOT ANYMORE.
But, on a side note, I am more organized, focused, independent, disciplined, etc. I am a very reliable person. If I say I will be there, I will be there. I gained some good traits from the Corps, also picked up a bunch of bad habits. I didn't swear as much as I used to.

Oh, heck no. The movie left out a lot as far as training goes. It mainly focused on "down time" and the day to day events of a Marine.
I was not a sniper, but worked with a few when training at 29 Palms. They are a very unique breed, that's for sure.
