Plastic box? good point except a plastic box still requires a metal bar for grounding...

My Dad (RIP) was a master electrician so I learned a few things. I also learned the trick of shorting an outlet with a single length of wire in each of the hot & neutral openings... to save myself a trip to the breaker panel.

I just lick my fingers and touch the screws....if that doesnt work the head of a hammer is fun....I prefer to use one with a rubber handle unless I've been incontinent lately

Make sure that the breaker is thrown. Becasue there is a code that allows a unit to have a ground break. Which means that there is always power going to the light even with the switch off. In that set up the swtich breaks the ground connection not the power to the fixture. If you didn't wire it originally then you dont know for sure. Better safe than sorry. The reason I say this is becasue if it is then the new switch may not work becasue it could be acting as a ground.

(Black) is hot
(White) is ground
(Green or Bare) is safety ground
NEC code for buildings strictly has the switch on the hot side. The reason is if you turn off the power to change your light bulb and for whatever reason you decide to stick your finger or other body parts into it. You won't get shocked.

If you switch the neutral side, then the socket would remain hot.

In low voltage applications it's allowed but not recommended.

Forget all that wiring hassle, just unscrew the bulb on the light you want off. Screw it back in when you want more light. See how simple that is?

I've been doing that.

It's no problem screwing the bulb in for light but,
if its been on for awhile and I have to unscrew it,
I make woman sounds.

At least that what I was told it sounds like.
My neighbor says he heard woman sounds coming from my house and then the light went out.

He says he also hears woman sounds after I get my bills out of the mailbox.

Don't you hate it when somebody starts a thread and then you have to dig the facts out little by little?

Ok, the room is 20x20 with another 7x7 dormer area.
One light is in the middle of the room over my pool table.
The other light is in the dormer area where I just built this bar.

I want to be able to continue to play pool but, at the same time signal to my free loading buddies that the 'Bar is Closed'.

When I first wrote the thread, I put in all the facts and specs and when I looked at it I thought, 'even I wouldn't read all this crap, especially about all this boring wiring from some guy too cheap to hire an electrician.'

So, I whittled it down to a sensible size post and then made people drag the rest out of me. (Which would make me even madder, if I was them)

Anyway, thanks guys. I think I have gleaned enough info from the thread to get the job done.

I couldn't ask the guys I shoot pool with as they already hold me in low regard.

Plus they already know somebody in the neighborhood has been making woman sounds and this situation would tip my hand that it was me.

or at least to get a good shock...

btw...my "lick my fingers" bit for shorting a circuit helps when removing lightbulbs that have been on a while too...but lick it and move fast else you gonna get burned.

The Pull chain switch was bad.
Tried another one and everything works correctly.

I may have blown the other one with an incorrect hookup.
Each test usually ended up with sparks flying around the room
...and the ensuing woman sounds.

Anyway now those jokers will know when the bar is closed without me having to pull a gun.

Can you tell us when the bar is open? That way when one of us is in the area we will know to stop by for a little snort and a game of pool. Although if i am playing it will be a short game. Hopefully there is nothing breakable close to the table either, sometimes all those colorful little ball just fly everywhere.

BTW How hard did the HD Lady slap you around when you took the bad switch back?

Bar is open most weekends. We play for a dollar a game. At the end of the night if I'm ahead, I roll up the dollars and stick them down the barrels of a shotgun I have on the wall. On nights that I lose and they want their winnings, I take the gun down, point it at them and say, "Come and get it."
I think I'm ahead, the gun is getting heavier.

I tried to pull a fast one and took the switch to Lowes.
I asked the lady there if she had a sister.
She said, "Yep, and she called. Now take your goat and get out of here before I climb over this counter and fix it so you'll need that pull chain when you go to the Men's Room."

Here is the light, with pull chain, in good working order.

And here is my pool shooting safety deposit box.

That is almost the light fixture in my dining room! Same globes, same wood, except mine is on carved arms instead of a wagon wheel design.

My wife hates it!
