No more flaming online . . . . or else!

Annoy someone online--two years in jail?

By: Declan McCullagh, CNET News.com
Published on ZDNet News: January 9, 2006, 11:19 AM PT

Commentary -- Annoying someone via the Internet is now a federal crime.

It's no joke.

Last Thursday, President Bush signed into law a prohibition on posting annoying Web messages or sending annoying e-mail messages without disclosing your true identity.

In other words, it's OK to flame someone on a mailing list or in a blog as long as you do it under your real name. Thank Congress for small favors, I guess.

FULL STORY

Glad to see Dubya tackling the major issues within the country.

It'll be interesting to see this law challenged (and utilized) a few times to see the results.

Hello all,

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Peladu
and I am with FFA (Forum Flaming Agency). I now
have the power to arrest you for any and all insults.
For this forum I will be arresting the fourteen members
who tend to be heavy bashers. You will be notified and
arrested alphabetically according to your user name.
Dzervit was arrested two months ago as he proved to be
the main thrust for such a law. He also is being used to
rat out his fellow bashers and seems overly willing to help.
As for now, when you receive an email from me, you will
be instructed to exit your home with your hands and pants up.

Sincerely,

Peladu
FFA

I suspect the main thrust of this law will be to target email spammers. Pretty much all spam is sent using a faked identity (and a faked email address).

Well, I'm toast!

Been nice harrasing you guys.
You guys were great and most had a great since of humor.

Ohh wait I already found a loophole.
It says real name not legal name. PSS-Mag is my real online name.
I'm back, with all my torturing tendencies!
Don’t worry D, that’s not the only one that I see… I’m coming to get you out buddy!

Hey Burt, long time no see. How's it going, ay?
