My son

Oh the time has come he will be 16 on June 5th. I've already called the insurance guy and have decided that, since we are 3 blocks from school and a 1/2 mile from any job he could get, I've put off getting him a car for the time being. He's a great kid, but being a single mom, I can't afford that. Any reasaonable suggestions?! My insurance would go up $1000.00 every 6 months to add him .

The kid can buy his own car and his own insurance if he wants to drive. Build some character.

I have a car in mind and he has agreed to pay for it. My friend said that we can just take over the payments on his. He only has til Feb. left to owe on it, I thought about it. Josh will be working this summer and has agreed to pay all of his earnings towards the car. My friend wants something bigger than what he has, nothing wrong with the car.

I walked a couple of miles in those shoes not too terribly long ago...

The parentals helped put it on the pavement in front of me but, that was just a 'low interest' loan.

Cars and insurance cost a fortune these days. I can sorta see where you're coming from but, would you want your child (new behind the wheel) out there driving any old POS (death trap) that they could afford? I had help when I started driving and I've helped out my daughter. I guess it comes down to the kid. If they're good and deserve the help, then help 'em out. If they've caused you nothing but trouble, let 'em walk.

I went through the same thing.

With the price of decent cars being what they are and then the cost of insurance on top of that, it all added up to one thing - expensive.

But my dad said, "Son, your mother and I are on a fixed income. Besides, you are 50 years old..."

That's all I ever get, excuses, excuses.

He should have slapped you up side the head and kicked you out of the house.

I've been threatening to run away from home for the last 32 years.

We have a bit more intelligence out here in Avalanche country.
I bought my first car for $2000. A month ago; I bought a Honda Civic with 137K miles on it for $2500. I paid for my own insurance. The difference between what I had to do 10 yrs ago is not a lot different than it is today.

A couple years ago when I first got my license (im 19 now,) I didnt have enough money for a vehicle so I was just added to my step moms insurance because it was the cheapest. I was added onto her car insurance as an "additional driver" with the good student discount. That only costed me somewhere around $40 a month (2001 Saturn.) Therefore, I could drive any vehicle that was insured with the owners permission. So I always drove my dads F-150 if I needed to go somewhere. This was all through State Farm. I am happy to say that I am now the proud owner of that truck.

the sooner he gets his own insurance, the cheaper it will be in the future. he'll pay now but save later.

i pay about $80 a month for full coverage on the truck and stang. max coverage with only $100 deductible. i have only been insured for 13 years.
