I got an idea to make some $$$

Find a new or used (slightly) 05-06 F150 for cheap. There are some out there. or maybe even buy an 06 next year when the dealers try to clear the lots of previous year trucks.. anyways..

Get the truck, put Approx $5000 worth of cosmetic mods on it, and sell it for around a $2000-$3000 profit?

List of mods would include (give or take some):

Custom hood-----------------------Paint
Exhaust
Lowering kit
Maybe some racing stripes..(lol)
Front bumper cover ----------------Paint
Rear roll pan------------------------Paint
Mark LT Handles (Cause they look good)
Window tint
Billet Grill
Wheels/tires
Soft tonnou Cover (Add $600 more for hard tonno)

I can do all the installs myself, but I'd have to have them painted by a body shop. I figured the cost up to be about $5000, give or take a few.

The truck would have to be an Extended cab or Crew cab for popularity reasons.

Any thoughts? Think it'll work?
Thats just extra mod money for me if it does.

Wouldn't work. It is damn near impossible to recoup what you spend on mods when you sell a vehicle. The average buyer doesn't care about the mods, only someone who is looking for a truck exactly like that one will pay that much.

What can you do that someone who wants all that couldn't do?

The biggest thing you are leaving out is the personal choice part of the selection...why would someone want the colors you choose, the hood you choose, the wheels you choose, etc. etc. ad infnitum, ad nauseum...

Have you ever seen a customized truck sitting for a long time on a dealer lot? I've seen lots of dealers try to do what you propose, and they can lose money a lot easier than I assume you can...Even the customizing shops are smart enough to wait for the customer to come to them!

Very true.

I think I need to do some more digging befor I leap into it.

What gets me is I see these REALLY old guys around driving Custom dealer trucks and I know the personal buyer didnt put those mods on himself... he bought it that way.

Performance mods... there is NO chance of getting your money back, but cosmetically, looks go alot farther IMO. A little says alot.

There are several 100 trucks right here on this board with those same mods. So obviously not a big market for them or everyone would be beating down thier doors to buy thiers from them.

Quite a bit of capital investment ... it's not making you any money while it's sitting ... most don't recoup ANY mod costs ... Parkway Ford will still be able to finance the deal whereas you won't ...

Sounds good by theory but, then again, so does Communism.

here's an idea...

buy a brand new truck and strip it to its base parts. Leave these in your garage for when the trucks start needing them in 4 years. You could then seel the parts and realize a 200% return on your investment.

Or sell the parts on eBay and get a 10% return (sell off the rims, leather seat covers, ETAC head unit, console shifter assembly, etc)

You should take your idea to a commercial lender and see what they think about your business plan.

Just kidding, I am pretty sure this is a bad idea. Of course, some people are able to pull this off, they just do it regularly and the vehicles are usually special ordered to the customers demands. See www.aev-conversions.com
