New competition for the Lightnings

I've had a chance to see some of Mercedes new cars and the new AMG 6.3 to be introduced in the coming months. This is of interest because this will also be the new SRT 6.3 Hemi to be introduced in 2008, which will also be the powerplant for the new Challenger.

If you see that conservative looking MB sedan, don't even try. The E-55 already ate 03-04 modded Cobras for breakfeast.

The new E63 AMG replaces the supercharged E55 V-8 for a throaty new 514-bhp, 495-lb.-ft. 6.2-liter V-8 designed by AMG (0–60 in — get this — 4.2 sec and will run the quarter in the 11's without even a chirp from the tires with the most advanced traction control available). That engine will also be fitted to the smaller and lighter C-63 AMG

If it cost more then $35,000 - $40,000 then its NO competition for the Lightning’s or Mustangs…

I am sure after the warranty runs out on those AMGs, and they break, there will be some real happy owners. Once the disaster has been diagnosed they probably invite you into the customer lounge and pour you a snifer of Cognac before laying the horrendously expensive bad news on you.

Tasty cars but hardly competition for a truck of any description.

I had somebody say to me once, "my friends Porsche is faster than your HD in the quarter"
Well Duh! I'd expect a car that costs 100k and weighs about as much as my bedcover to be faster than a fullsize truck, wouldn't you?

Mind you, if I spent the extra 70k that the Porsche cost over my truck, I bet I'd be quicker

I personally saw an 03 Cobra get smoked by an E-55 AMG. It was really modded with slicks, aggressive tune, 6lb pulley... There was also a video of such a race circulating on this site.

The point of the posting was that this will be the new SRT-8 engine in 2008. That would then make it an apple to apple comparison.

Yeah, well- I'd take an AMG over any Ford product. No disrespect to Ford, its just that few manufacturers build "sleepers", (I love sleepers) and if you don't know the vehicles, you couldn't tell a pedestrian E350 from a BEAST of a vehicle in the E63. In fact, one may stupidly believe the E350 and 500 to be superior because of the higher number.

The E55 was nipping at the M-5's heels with an automatic tranny. The CLS55 was faster than the new V-10 M5 in straight line tests with only 469 HP compared to 500 in the Bimmer.

So, expect the new E63 & CLS63 to annihilate the M5 in the straights and maybe even in the curves.

I've been an AMG fan every since I saw the AMG Hammer in 1987 in Car & Driver. A 181 MPH family sedan, that could still seat 5. You gotta love it. Many sedans today could out-run the 300 E based AMG Hammer in a 0 - 60 run, but that top speed is still attainable only by the highest performance cars, and most of them have 2 doors; except the 4-door Bentley Flying Spur, which ran 192 MPH in the deserts of Africa.

Note: the 6.3L is capable of much more performance than teh 514 HP it's tuned to in the E63. In the S63, it has 612HP. (Six-Hundred Twelve Horsepower).

INSANE

I'd love to see the 6.3 in the Challenger; but, then again... I wouldn't be interested in a 50+ thousand dollar musclecar.

X2

Not to get offtopic to much, but the Challenger is scheduled for 2008. They also say it's going to stay "true to it's roots". If this is the case ...

who's gonna get one?

It's on my short list, along with the upcoming Camaro and the GT500.

I'm considering getting either a new challenger or a 68 camaro sometime in the next couple years.

I agree with what you said except that the S63 has 510hp. It is the S65 which has 612hp but it is a twin turbo V12 which had to be dialed back by over 200hp and 400ft/lbs of torque because they didn't have a tranny that could take it. But they are working on that
