deer hunting success

Here we can shoot a spike buck. I think it's 4" tine to be a spike.
Button bucks you must tag as a doe.
December 9th starts firearms antler less season.
And it's just that, I can take 2 deer, if I take 2 then 1 must be a buck, the other can be anything. If you kill a buck first, then you tag it with the antlered farm tag and you still have the any deer.
As a land owner I get an antler tag, then have to pay for an any deer tag. I can only use the antler tag in the first season. Got a little 4 point not worth taking picture of but he is yummy.

I used to teach in the Northridge Local School district, near Mt. Vernon, Ohio. School was always closed the Monday after Thanksgiving because of "Buck Fever." Nobody would be in school---boys, teachers---andthey couold never get enough subs---if you can't beat them, you might as well hunt with them.

I wish I still had a the pic of one of mine from last year. I shot a doe in the head because it was soo close. The picture was not safe for work, little children, easily frightned or people with weak stomachs, or pregnant women.
Bullet went in right infront of the ear on one side.. that side looked normal. There wasnt anything left of the other side.
I've done quite a few head shots because it's SO much easier to field dress and all the meat stays good.

I believe a heart or lung shot to be the best shot of all. I cannot think of anyone who shoots an animal with a head shot for any reason but to each his own...
PS. A heart or lung shot does not matters not when gutting a deer.

I've droped them from head, neck and shoulder shots. I dont like lung shots if I can avoid it. That would be an accident from me. Besides having to chase it, I think it gives the meat an odd flavor and the adreniline rush as they run definatly makes it tougher. That may be what makes it taste odd to me too.

The farthest shot I think i have ever taken was about 75 yrds.. and that's being generous. I get into the thick of the woods and they get right up on me.
Any like others have said, I don't like trying to trail them either, but usually they do drop like a rock with a good behind the shoulder lung shot too.
I just had rather take a head shot on a doe because the field dress is so much cleaner... cleaner is a better word than easier. Everything is so fresh and in order instead of blown all to crap.
But to each his own.. I still shot most deer behind the shoulder though.
