Let your kid make the mistake. Put a limit on it. He can play after chores, homework, etc. is done. If his homework isn't done and he is playing it take it away so he can learn his leason.
OR
You can have it your way and have a talk with him why you don't want it. Tell him you can sign him up for baseball and you and him can go in the backyard and play catch or go to the cages and take some bp. Then agian he could get mad because you wouldn't get it for him. I'd tell him he could have it as long as he gets rid of all the other systems, he will only be able to play if his homework is done,if his chores are done, and if you don't need any help around the house. I mean if you want him to go outside who is he soppose to play with? I mean like for me I didn't have any nieghborhood kids around. How about you offer him to go play catch,go play basketball, etc.

anyone who says to get him a ps3 literally has NO IDEA what they are talking about. Sorry, but it's true...here's why: You won't be able to find one ANYWHERE for less than thousands of dollars. Anyone who sits here claiming the ps3 is a better value that can be had for $650 has not a fricken clue what is going on in the market. Sony is so dumb they don't even have remotely close to enough units on the market...and don't count on that changing ANY time this year.
On top of that, it has basically 1 game that has been considered worth buying. that sure sounds exciting (not really). ALL it is about is the "insane graphics," which 99% of people can't even take advantage of. I would like to venture a guess your son will NOT be playing on a 1080p ready HDTV? Ok then.
In that case, I would suggest searching Craigslist for a used xbox360 premium bundled with games. Will it be "used" ? Yes, but who cares as long as it works. Also, if you buy bundled you save TONS on the extra accessories and games over buying separately.
NOW....the OTHER option...and I think the best option is to get a Nintendo Wii. this is the "underdog" from a PR point of view...as the ps3 stole the media show, but as of now it is getting much better reviews. I have played it at my friend's house, and can say it is truly amazing. Unlike your ps3 which will leave your kid sitting in front of the TV... the Wii is literally based on the motion sensing controllers... so he will be standing up jumping around and working up a sweat while playing. I played for an hour and was literally sweaty and then sore for 2 days from it. And I'm in good shape... lol.
I had a blast, and my friend and I were laughing so hard we could barely breathe. I bet we burned 500 calories just from laughing.
The best part? nintendo (unlike Sony) isn't retarded and they have TONS of units constantly being delivered to stores...so you shouldn't have to pay a premium. AND, brand new it is only $250!!! You could get a brand new Wii (Which comes with a game called Nintendo Sports, which actually has 6 sports games on it) for $250, and then spend about $60 more for each set (you need 2 controllers per person) for additional controllers...and games are around $50. So you could in theory get a Wii, controllers, and 2 games for the price of the Xbox 360 premium new (retail), and be $200 LOWER than the cost of the ps3 WITHOUT a game and IF you found one at a store (which you won't).
So, basically I suggest either a used xbox360 premium bundled with games for the best value (I own one, it's pretty slick), OR the new Wii.
Good luck!

Some of the WII games looks really cool. I was looking at them today. I remember for a little while it seemed like gamecube made the funnest games. The PS3 looks great, but I'm gonna hold out I think and just keep my xbox. Heck most of the time after work I'm to tired to play it or to busy on the weekends.

Well after reading all of your post, i just laid it out to him. I said it's your money and if that's what you want, then i will pitch in and pay the rest. I said if that's what you really want then you deserve it. I said i want you to think about it before you decide. I told him in 3 years he will want to drive and that I would match him dollar for dollar on some kind of vehicle that we could work on together. I said he could be one of the first of his buds that could be driving in his own wheels, or one of the last..... The jury is out right now........

I would get the xbox for him.
You you look in the internet you can find it cheaper the 400. Dell right now has it for 340, amazon.com yesterday had it for 100.
I know 3 people who bought from dell. They were to late for amazon.
I've had the 360 for a year now and I love it. I don't even call myself a gamer. But you can do more stuff then game, you can download movies through xbox live(like on demand), hook it up to your computer and show home movies on your TV (which is easier then burning them to a dvd and watching them), play your mp3s though your tv from yuor computer (which is nice because my 360 is in my room and my computer is downstairs)
I would say it would be a good investment. And will be around for 5-6 years

Dad,
he's a gamer and that's his hobby. I'm 33 years old and I love to sit in my game room and be engrossed in a story or plot that you cant find in a book or on TV. I love to SAVE THE WORLD.
Video games have changed sooo much since when we were kids. Now they have intense storylines (like movies). Imagine being able to control the main character in a movie...YOUR in control.
It's a multi-billion dallors industry these days. If he's interested in them enough, who's to say he wont be a ground breaking programmer someday and revolutionize gaming console FOREVER. Your son could be a part of history.

Well he has decided...We bought a xbox 360 tonight for 399.00. It is the one with the hard drive and free wireless controler. It came with a free game and a 1 year free replacement on-the spot warranty. He is starting to think twice about it, i laid 400.00 on the counter next to it. I said he could have either one, and now he said he wants think about it over night.

Sheeeeeeeeet! I'd taken the money.
But yeah, let em have his 360.. he'll wear it out in a couple years and want a car.
You should let him get into trouble while he's still young.. but not SERIOUS trouble. It gets serious after you turn 18.
I calmed down alot when I turned about 19ish.. realizing I can get in seriuos trouble for the crap I did/was doing/ wanted to do. Seeing all your buddie go to jail for stupid stuff turned me around..
But I had a freaking blast before that!!!

I think if someone laid 400 beside my money. I might have took it. Although I do have a blast with the 360. Make sure to get the warranty though, they only have 3 months from the factory. Which is rediculous. When I was playing madden sunday morning it would freeze and flash 3 red lights. I called and it might need to be serviced. It stop doing it that afternoon and hasn't did it since.

Well he came home from school today and took the MONEY!!! I about crapped my pants....He said he had talked it over with his friends and half of them said to take the money. He said to return it tonight, so we did. I bought him a game that he wanted for his PS2 and he has been playing it for an hour now. He said that he thinks that this will be better in the long run and that i was right for making him think about the future! Man i Love this Kid! When we went back to the store, i told the clerk about his choice. She got all excited and re affirmed him that he made the right choice.
