New 2007 GMC Seirra???
I was into a GM dealer yesterday and saw the new 2007 GMC Seirra. The one they had on the lot was a crew cab 4 x 4 with the samll box about 5'. What caught my eye was the mileage figures posted on the sticker price of the truck. Transport Canada - 19 mpg city and 27 mpg hwy. These are Canadian figures. 10.1 litres per 100 for highway. The engine in the truck was the 4.8 litre. Transport Canada uses EPA figures from the US.
I haven't driven a GM product since the 1970's.
I have had 3 Ford trucks over the past 20 years and I am shopping for a new truck which will be a 3/4 ton. I like the Ford F250's and so does my wife. But the new GMC 2500 truck has a nicer front end in my opinion than the new 2008 Ford Super Dutys. I don't know what Ford was thinking when they came up with that design. The 2007's look better.
The new GMC's in the 2500 series will also have the variable cylinder engines with increased fuel efficency. Its somethig Ford doesn't have. (yet) I heard this morning on the radio that the new 2007 Chevy Silverado has been named Truck of the Year in Canada. I don't like the front end appearance of the Chevy, the GMC looks better.
Don't need diesel for what I do with the truck. I think the interiors of the Fords look better. The option packages are better. The price of both the Ford and the GMC are very close to each other. What it will come down to when I buy is the fuel economy numbers and the price. My wife has already stated if the fuel economy is better in the GMC then that is what we will go with. I would need the 6.0 engine in the GMC, or the 5.4 in the Ford.
As you can see from my signature, I drive a Ford Supercrew with the 4.6 engine. My mileage has averaged exactly what Ford said I would get. I keep a spread sheet of my mileage and over the coures of its life, it has averaged to 16.1 mpg. and the cost per mile is 13 cents to run it. I have been very happy with this pickup.
Any of you guys have comments (LOL) or experience with this?
Bottom line for me is I want the Ford.

I've driven the new GM and Chev tons of times. It's good on gas. I've only driven the 5.3 Flex Fuel engine and it works well. I drive the GMC crew cab 4X4 LTZ about 200km about a month ago and it was just fine. It's no better then the ford and no worse either. I like driving it. It was nice to drive. Rode very smooth and quite. I like the BOSE stereo that was in it.

The mileage figures on all vehicles are way off. The new GM trucks use their displacement on demand, which shuts off 4 cylinders when under very little load. This sounds like a good idea but in practice the cylinders only shut down when you are coasting. I read in a auto mag that instead of the 20ish that was listed they were only getting 11 or so don't expect to get anywhere close to the mileage that is claimed.

Yep, Car & Driver said the needle was stuck on 11 MPG...
But, that was with the 6.0L VortecMAX.
My 5.4L Expy was always on 11.1, 11.3- I don't care if I was on the highway, or in the city. I reset it on the highway cruise and it jumped to 14.4 MPG.
Traded that on my MDX, expecting stellar improvements, but only moved to 14.5 - 15.5 in the city...
But, on the highway, she'll get 22 - 23 MPG, and that is very nice, especially in a 7 passenger SUV.
