Windows Vista

For years I have been building my own computers. Well it's time again, and I was wondering if I should buy Vista or keep XP Pro? I was one of the few that bought "ME" when it first came out, and don't want to be a guinie pig again.
What OS are you running?
Thanks!

I'm thinking along the same lines. Dont think I'm going to upgrade, I will proably skip over this one. It uses alot of memory and I have not heard of a single thing it can do that XP couldn't.

Personally, I will not go near Vista for at least another year. Still having problems with drivers and software. Especially since M$ did a 0 day modification that caused many of the programs that did work with it to have problems.
They are even calling it ME II.

I have had Vista for 5 months.

The only problem I had was with some media players not being compatible.

That problem was fixed in a matter of a few weeks.

Its been smooth sailing ever since.

I didnt upgrade, I bought a new system with it installed.

I'm not a fan of Vista. Yet. I've tried it twice, for a couple weeks each time, but there are just too many problems and incompatibilities for me to make the switch right now. Once they release SP1 and fix some of the problems I'll consider switching. For now though, I'm sticking with XP Pro which works great.

The biggest issue was that it would randomly drop my network connection multiple times a day, and in order to get it back I would have to disable and re-enable my NIC. I tried some fixes I found around the net, but nothing seemed to help.

I also had some problems with video codecs and players not working properly, along with a couple other miscellaneous problems.

Yes, a ton of RAM is definitely a requirement. I've found that 2+ Gigs works best, though you can get away with 1GB. Also, a dual-core CPU really helps.

Go with Vista. It seems to be much more stable.

I run both Windows XP/Vista on my PC. I prefer XP because it's faster and uses less system resources. Theoretically in the next 3-5 years Microsoft will discontinue support for XP just like they did a few years ago for 98SE. At that point, I would upgrade.

You can build a laptop from a barebones kit, but you don't get the quality and you aren't saving money - and forget about support and warranty.
