I have a mossberg 835 exelent gun.
I also have an 870 exelent.
The mossberg cost considerably less and shoots great too.

Muddy Ford,

Yep I sure am!

For a home defense shotgun, most people want the pump action because there is a much less chance for a failure to feed or eject. Semi-auto shotguns typically aren't the preferred home defense shotgun.

You're gonna be hard pressed to buy more gun for the money than the Mossberg 500. My first scattergun was a 500 and that was 40 years ago. I have since bought the 870's and still have several, Brownings, Benellis, Savages, etc but when I need a shotgun, the 500 is going. It may go with another one but it has never failed me yet and it has untold cases of ammo run thru it including 3" magnums. It shoots the best pattern of all of my shooters. You can buy fancier, no doubt, but you won't buy better.

The whole point of a pump action is so the intruder hears the cha chick!

Remington 870!

And has any one seen "No Country for Old Men"? The hitman in that movie carries a mean black semi-auto shotgun with a silencer... Talk about an awsome shotgun...

Be careful with the "yall" usage. It can become addictive.

Anywho, a buddy of mine asked what to get, as I own six shotguns. I asked him what he wanted to do with it. Based on his answers, I suggested an 870 thats shoots up to 3 1/2 shells, with a synthetic stock. He goes to buy one at Bass Pro Shop, and comes back with a Benneli. It was on sale, and they knocked off $200 bucks. Make sure you asked if there is a better shotgun on sale, and you may come home with a gem.

You cannot go wrong with an 870. The border patrol and police are using them quite a bit these days.

The Remington 870 is an excellent gun, also look at the Browning BPS. I own both, they are both great.

I dunno, I would say that most people that own and use their firearms probably take good condition of them. If they don't then they are probably the same type of people that don't change their engine oil when they should be, or perform maintenance on other items they own.

I was mainly referring to the fact that there is more to go wrong with a semi-auto shotgun than there is in a pump action. This is also why you find most dangerous game hunters or guides prefer a bolt action rifle or pump action 12ga as the preferred hunting or defense weapon against these deadly critters. The preferred firearm for the Rangers in Alaska for bear defense is the trusty old Remington 870 12ga.
