The men initially paid $30 for the room. If the bellboy returns with $5 but keeps $2, then the cost of the room was $30 minus $2 to the bellboy less $3 refund which is $25.

Ok, less try it again. They each paid $10 but were refunded $1. that is $10 minus $1 equals $9 out of pocket. A total of $27. The $2 the bell boy kept was part of the $27, not in addition. They ended up paying $25 for the room plus $2 to the bell boy, total $27. they confusion comes from the erroneous statement that they were out $27 PLUS the $2 to the bell boy.

The men paid $30 minus $2 to the bellboy. That's $28 the men spent in addition to the $2 to the bellboy minus $3 for a refund . (No such thing as dissappearing dollars unless you work for the government.)

No, they paid 30 minus the 3 refunded. the 2 to the bell boy is included in the net 27. Whew!

A WHILE LATER THE MAN BEHIND THE DESK REALIZED THE ROOM WAS ONLY $25

SO HE SENT THE BELLBOY TO THE 3 GUYS' ROOM WITH $5.
ON THE WAY THE BELLBOY COULDN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO SPLIT $5 EVENLY BETWEEN 3 MEN, SO HE GAVE EACH MAN A $1 AND KEPT THE OTHER $2 FOR HIMSELF.
THIS MEANT THAT THE 3 MEN EACH PAID $9 FOR THE ROOM, WHICH IS A TOTAL OF $27, ADD THE $2 THAT THE BELLBOY KEPT = $29.

WHERE IS THE OTHER DOLLAR?
I'm with ya Blue!

If anyone is still confused...

Initial cost of the room =$30
Money given to bellboy to refund =$5
Difference between the two =$25 or the adjusted cost of the room

NOW...

Bellboy has 5 dollars and keeps 2 for himself, leaving 3 dollars, one for each man.

The trick relies on the reader getting hung up on the number $27. The $27 is actually the $25 cost of the room, plus the $2 the bellboy kept. Now add in the $3 refunded to the 3 men and you have the original $30.

Everyone get it?

This was my final exam for advanced algebra class in college. The correct answer is the original posters did not set the problem up correctly. It misleads you into setting the problem up wrong. There is no missing money and if you got this wrong on the final exam- you failed the course. Per Professor Campbell, if you can't set a problem up correctly, nothing you learned in this class is worth a hoot. There is another one where I can make you believe that a bottle of wine without a cork costs $1.00 but a bottle of wine with a cork costs $1.10. The cork costs .05. It's all in how you setup the problem.

Original cost to three guys- $25.00
Amount of money returned- $3.00
Amount of money kept.....- $2.00
Total money accounted for-$30.00

There is no missing money.

Sure they did. They set it up so that they could fool people!

This isn't really a math or algebra problem, it's more of a reading comprehension and logic problem. (Which is probably why so many people have problems with it.)

PS: Tumba, it's all yours buddy. Just ask the bellboy.
