Had a midnight rescue operation last night. We went walking about 11:30 and got back about 12:00. When we went through the gate into the backyard, heard a splash in the pool. I was sure it was a squirrel, it's happened before. It was swimming all around and when it would get close to the side, Maggie would try to grab it. Finally caught Maggie, got her in the garage and go the light on. It had gotten into the skimmer shute and was hiding on the ledge. I had to use a stick to force it to go on into the skimmer. Got a glove and got the lid off, squirrels can give you a nasty bite. Very strong teeth. Turned out to be a very exhausted, scared, half grown Cottentail. I talked to it, rubbed it's back untill I could get a grasp on it's nape and lifted it out, set it down on the steps. It went hopping down the walk, around the garage and off to the woods. It was one water soaked bunny rabbit. Squirrels can get out of the pool as long as Maggie is not there, but doubt a bunny could. Of course Maggie was not ready to go to bed and fussed about it and then, that was the first place she went this morning. Had to check out the skimmer.

Yep, always figured critters want to live as much as we do. Pretty difficult to for me to embrace snakes, but my grandson has made me change my attitude toward them. I can let his pet snake, Steve, wrap around my arm without trying to snap his head off.
