Old HS friend of mine is one of the 1300+ firefighters battling the wildfires in Texas.

He just posted on FB: I've never been in a position to where we are choosing Which houses to save and which to let burn. Three mansions burning as we drive by.

That's jacked up man. But, if one house is too far to save, I guess you have to do what you have to do.

Yeah it's a mess here. Friday the winds were out of the north about 40 mph. Yesterday winds calm then switched south 15-25 and holding today. Poor guys are working hard. :o

I hear you. Winds be kind of strong here as well. We have a No Burn here. If you get caught burning something, its a hefty fine.

Nice choice of words.

Ok this might be a very stupid question and I've never really been anywhere near a wildfire or have seen how they behave, but how come people that know its coming don't just take a tractor around their yard and make like a barrier of dirt.... like make a moat type deal and put the dirt in front of it? Ya I overthink everything and I guess if that would work everyone would be doing it but why wouldn't it work. Just the fact of the flaming ashes in the air coming back down or what?

We have had the wildcat fire here since wednesday. It got within 4 miles of town and now is taking back off to the north. So far it has burned 130,000 acres and is only 10 percent contained. Pray for some rain!

Very high winds with a large fire causes the fire to jump. Small dirt mounds will be useless. I've seen them jump a long distance.

Kinda what I figured but just had to ask......but then again theoretically speaking, I you had a big enough mound, it would work haha.

Yeah Friday the whole sky here was filled with smoke and the fire was probably over 100 miles away.

That pic looks like what the sky used to look like around here back in the late 70's early 80's before the steel plant had all the emission controls put in
Dont need iron supplements around here, there is enough in the air

All the water bombers have been out practicing on the river all week up here. Its been very dry here except for this bloody snow we got today
