OK. I have greased everything up and still she makes the clunk noise. I decided to get my wife to help me test the steering. With the truck parked and the key on engine off I had her move the wheel quickly in short bursts side to side while I held the tie rods. It was clunking and I could feel it in the tie rod. Over the past year or so the only part front end wise I haven't changed yet is the inner tie rod ends and either they are bad or the steering rack is bad. Hoping for the inner tie rod ends. :o

Just scored two inner tie rods on ebay. Looked at some replacement vids. Doesn't look too difficult. Just need to take good measurements.

I've always counted the # of turns taking it off, then when putting the new ones on turn them as many times as it took getting them off. Then I go get an alignment.

we use masking tape at work, two or three long strands from bottom of window, over the door, back to the bottom of the glass is plenty to hold it up.

Yeah I gotcha, but by bushing mounts you mean where the rack mounts to the body, correct?

rack to frame yes, should be two big bolts below/above it where it bolts to the cradle, they have bushings mounted in the eyes on the rack.

Are the racks a common problem with these trucks? I know my dad had to have his replaced at 15,000 or 20,000 miles and mine was replaced before I got the truck.

racks in general are fine but most people dont want to touch the inner tie rods so they just replace the whole rack

I think this is the only post im allowed to talk about how good racks are and not get in trouble with the wifey
