The heads on it were redone for bigger exhaust/intake valves also, plus they were ported....
Those old 350s, 383s and even the 400s could be very strong runners. I used to have a ball racing some of the Chevy IIs and the Novas but my most fun was a kid in a 66 Chev pickup with a 454. That little Cleveland would eat his lunch. Had a lot of fun running a guy that had an 86 T Type Buick. He would get me so far off the line that it looked like there was no way I could catch him. About 3/4 down the track, I would blow by as he ran out of engine on the top end.

The nice thing about the olds motors is hardly anything needed to be done with them....you just had to find one....

Also not sure on Ford's version of the 5.0 but the N/A "LR" version has VVL as well...
