Ah, another person in the same boat as I.

Additional question here and semi hi-jack... with a colonial (2 story), would it be best to run two outside units (one piped thru the attic and one thru the first flr., or would one unit runnin to both locations be sufficient? I can access the first flr. thru the basement easily, and the attic fairly easily, but have been getting mixed answers as to how many units I would nee.

I have one unit in the basement cooling/heating the first floor and one unit in the attic cooling/heating the second floor. Works great. Each air handler has its own condenser.

I live in a brick ranch style home and we do have window air conditioners but it seems pointless to go from one room that feels like 10 below to the next which feels like it's 80. I am interested in having central air installed but my problem is that I have hot water baseboard heat which means I need to run duct work in the attic.

Anybody else gone this route?

All i can say is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, look bro i live just a bit north of you and in 2 1/2 months you will no longer need it because it will be snowing big time!!!!!. I am taking it all in for as long as i can, burn me baby burn me up, bring on the heat.... J/k by the way.

From what I know Turbo it's usually better to have one unit that is large enough (well, slightly larger than) the area that needs to be cooled. One less unit is one less part that can break. Then again, I'm in WI and we don't use air that much per yr.

I too have heard it both ways as well. I personally have one unit that cools the basement, main floor, and upper (well, main and upper as the basement is always cool)

Well I havent had a basement in 20 years. In the south we have it in the attic.

I have no helpful information for you regarding central air conditioning. I do however live in Eastern Pennsylvania and I am working in Philly this week for work (paving). The heat index broke 100. This sucks.

You definately want two units. The second one pays for itself in comfort and energy!

3600 sq ft and up - 2 units
3000-3600 sq ft - 2 units or zoned system
3000 sq ft or less - one unit sized properly

Duct work in the basement also allows you to dampen the system to balance out the system. You'll lose a lot of cfm through flex piping in the attic but sometimes you have no choice.

Use insulated steel duct work in the attic
Absolutly no flex pipe anywhere.

Just a strong recomendation

What's the matter Buck, you still have snow in your panties

Give me a good snow storm instead of this crap. I can always put another jacket on and another log in the fire. You need to move south old man. hehehe

It's 10:20 pm and it's still 81 degrees out and 84 inside my house. That is just wrong.

The heating and ac guy stopped tonight. It looks like the best route will be with everything run in the basement as I have a full basement. 4"x10" registers will be cut in the floor in each room. We are going to cut the air return register in the hallway since it is the center of the house. He uses Tempstar units. He measured the square footage of the house and counted and measured all the windows and doors. He has a computer program which calculates everything down to the best location for each floor register. Should have a quote in a day or so.

He had 2 more stops for central ac install quotes after mine and he came at 6:00 pm. After about 30 minutes we had the whole system basically figured out.

The temperature is going down outside but the humidity is still up there. I was in New Orleans several years ago in August. I don't understand how people even function in heat like that. I about fell on may *** from the humidity when the airport doors opened up.

The HR person at the plant was from up north in PA and she said that it took her 3 years to get used to the heat in the summers. No spank you!
