Unhappy Virus

The 'Iloveyou' e-mail hit me particularly hard.

Before I knew it was a virus, I left my wife and was trying to contact old girlfriends who I thought sent me the notes.

Cool

I work for the 3rd largest computer company in the world and we had it hit our systems. And we have the #1 virus protection software for networks which is even one of our products.

Beware of copycat virus' today with subjects of "fwd: joke" or "oh really"

Cool

Hit here to, luckily we shut down the mail server and warned everybody before it got out of hand. Had 12 pc's to clean up. The virus wasnt bad if it had not reached the trojan horse stage. Most of our users had turned off at that point and clean up was easy. Delete all *.vbs files on the hard drive and change two entries in the registry. Then back to business as usual!

Nobody loves me....

But incase you are one of the 100's of people for whom I have a email addy:
I don't use ISP email, therefore I don't store my email addys in the 'outlook' or other 'pc' based email program. So if I 'Go Down' I go down alone.

...and besides, I don't Love You either!

btw, WHO GOT HIT?
If you got hit, please post here (ha ha)

"Who didn't get hit is the best question. The Love Bug is spreading so far and fast it seems to leave no group untouched. The virus actually uses Outlook to replicate itself and attacks file types commonly used in many companies. This is why some are calling it "corporate flavored."

Who were some of the big outfits affected?

Ford Motor Company
The British Parliament
Merrill Lynch
The CIA http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/ne...562060,00.html

PREVENTION
Treat attachments like mail bombs. This virus works only if you open the attachment that comes with it. If you're not expecting an attachment, kill it.

Practice safe computing. Every couple of months I end up writing about the latest virus making the rounds. Hello! Viruses are a part of life on the Internet. Make sure your anti-virus programs are up to date.

Don't let down your guard. The Love Bug wasn't the first virus and it won't be the last. Be prepared for the next one.

RECOVERY
Got infected? The easiest route to a cure is one of the several anti-virus companies. But getting through to them yesterday was a bear because that's what everybody else was trying to do.

Symantec and McAffee. both have developed downloads for cleaning your system.

Trend Micro has a Web page up that will walk you through some of the important steps to get you disinfected.

ZDNet has also put together a patch kit.
Click for more. http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/toolk.../iloveyou.html

Trend Micro reminds Outlook users that they can configure their program to reject all messages with the subject line "I love you."

Seems a little harsh to me, but love hurts.

SEE?

All you perverts that opened the "I love You" attachment thought you were gonna get something for nothing!

Probably written by some cross-dresser......

I know who loves me: My cat, my parrot, my F150 and my boss and sometimes my wife if it's payday. All other claims of loving Dunbarton are suspect.

This thing was nasty! We had 250 workstations get infected across the country and one group today that was very busy re-imaging. Our west coast divisions got hit the hardest. Its unbelievable how a page and a half of VB script code can do that much damage that quickly. At one time, traffic through one site's post office was showing 10,500 messages being sent/delivered. Kind of odd for a site that typically only has 20 people who are logged in! Fun day. Thank GOD for filters.

I got to work yesterday and had about 20 of them things on there deleted all of them, at home I have AOL so I generally don't have to worry about these things since they are almost always on Microsoft E-mail.

Our I.T. department called me at home before I left for the office and said that the computer system was being protected and that email would be 15 minutes late.

My boss called soon after and said that since the computers were down I could meet her at the local restaurant for breakfast with the rest of the department before we came in to work.

When I got to work, my phone mail informed me that not only had the network been scanned, but that they were about to come and update the virus software on my computer, and that I should just get a cup of coffee in the meantime.

I then woke up.

Cool

Funny thing happened at my job. I got an email from the mailing list that I belong to for my motorcycle. I lister in the UK warned about the virus (aparently it hit there first). I talked to my boss and we had a warning out to our company just minutes before the emails started to role in. Thankfully, we didn't have a single machine get hit.

I work at Picatinny Arsenal in NJ. There are a little more than 3000 people here each with their own PC. Then add in hundreds of servers and viola-- down 6 days and counting. They should throw the MFer off a plane into a volcano on world wide TV with the promise of harsher punishment in the future---Bob
