Do you drive a highway of death?

Here are the 10 worst highways to drive in the US. A good many in California.

I wonder if there is any correlation between the high number of old people and illegal immigrants in all the areas mentioned in the top ten? The reasons mentioned seem to be problems seen on many stretches of highway all over the country.

Don't know about the other freeways but those in California are high but actually not too bad when considering how many people travel those hwy's each day. Everytime I've been on those freeways it's completely packed. It's a trip taking a bike on the I-5.

As bad as it sounds, I'm sure if you weigh the ratio of deaths per daily/annual driving it wouldn't seem as high.

Still both sad and scary.

I drive US19 in Florida all the time. While it's not on the list of the most "deadly" roads in America, I have heard numerous times on the news it's one of the most dangerous. It is horrible for accidents, and the amount of pedestrians killed.

I believe the roads I travel are more dangerous than those on the list.

I see accidents in my rearview mirror all the time.

I swore the 101 or the 303 would have been on there more than the 10.

Correlation does not imply causation

Where do you live?

FWIW, I live in an area where agriculture is a big part of our economy, and it is widely known that many of our local residents are undocumented workers. Many of these undocumented workers (aka illegal aliens) actively drive, yet are not blessed with the driver's training and licenses that many US Citizens enjoyed.

IMO, a higher portion of illegal aliens = a higher % of the population that does not have valid drivers licenses.

I'll guess unlicensed drivers are more likely to be in accidents than licensed drivers. How's that for a politically correct correlation?

BTW, when they have a drunk driver check point here, the results are often printed in the newspaper. Typically, the cops will screen 500 - 600 cars, and approximately 3-6 drunks are caught. At recent checks, 120 - 150 cars have been impounded for being driven by by drivers that are 'unlicensed'. So approximately 20% - 25% of all the drivers on the road in my town are 'unlicensed'. I'll guess a large % of those are illegal aliens.

Those unlicensed drivers usually have their cars impounded and have to pay to get their cars back. But there is no INS involvement whatsoever.

Funny. That's exactly what I'm implying.

As a professional driver with over 18 years and 1.5 million miles under my belt, I feel qualified to make a judgment call on the topic. Old people doesn't mean 60. It means ancient and barely able to walk, let alone drive. Illegals, on average, are terrible drivers compared even to teenagers. They are also much more likely to not have any training at all, and to be driving unsafe vehicles.

The 101 got tame since all those damn speed cameras went in. I can still drive 100MPH to work on the 202 and not get a ticket, not that I do that though. I would think where there are more speeders there would be more accidents, but most of the time on the San Tan 202 the average speed of traffic is 80+. Just goes to show that lowering speed limits doesn't decrease traffic deaths on highways.

I live in West Los Angeles at the moment. I wasn't trying to make a political statement or nothin'. Just being a smart@$$ I've never seen a dd check point so I couldn't say, but those are good statistics (statistically speaking only, darnright shameful otherwise). I've never been in an accident, but all the ones I've almost been in or that I've heard about from friends and family have involved women. how's that for a correlation

Do you think the "tests" that let us drive legally are that great, by the way? A monkey could pass those test. My brother passed the test (on his second try) and he's the worst driver I know.

In the states I've lived in, driver's ed is required to get a license. Regardless, passing the test shows a basic understanding of what's required of you on the road. That includes being able to read road signs. (Yes they are important.) What's wrong, are you an illegal octogenarian or something?

Oh yeah, don't get me started on women drivers. There's no way to measure the number of accidents caused by someone that wasn't involved in the actual pile-up. I see women and old people do some crazy stuff, causing accidents to happen around them. Of course, they drive on completely oblivious of what they've done.

I know plenty of female drivers do a fine job... And old folks, too, but it just happens that when I see someone doing something completely boneheaded, it's a woman or an old person. Like the time I was driving on the Interstate, and an old fella was coming the other way in (In heavy traffic) on the centerline, with traffic in both lanes swerving to the shoulder to miss him... He had to be doing 50 or 60 mph the wrong way. And yes, he was wearing a hat.
