Post Ignorance was bliss.

I've had nothing but good experiences from the Ford products I've owned over the years ( last Ford PU, a sweet '85 F250) so when I bought my new (to me) '99 F150, I was happy as a clam. Then I found this website and learned about door cracks, piston slap, blown gaskets, scored cylinders etc. etc. (Got a stay of execution today when I learned my 4.6L is a Romeo motor and probably won't develop piston slap!) Always assumed Fords were well engineered, but now I find out their air intake and exhaust systems should be replaced and the engine computer won't function effectively without an aftermarket chip. Now that I know all this stuff, I'm hooked! Gotta keep reading the message boards, gotta keep watching for those first symptoms my baby is about to crash and burn. Long live F150 online!
Yep, I know F150 is the best selling motor vehicle and with millions of them out there, there's bound to be a few lemons. And for sure, it is helpful if a problem comes up to know how others have handled it and what Ford is doing about it. Still, I had more peace of mind before I knew about all this stuff. Ignorance was bliss.

Duck (aka webfoot)- it gets worse:

* stereo is not powerful enough - replace and add BIG amps
* speakers do not have enough bass - replace and add some BIG subs
* shocks too soft - replace...maybe add some
* not enough lighting - replace and add more lights
* too much lighting - put dark covers on them
* tires are too small - replace
* wheels are too small (or too shiney, or too standard) - replace
* bed is too open - put a tonneau cover on it or a topper...or
* too many bugs hitting windshield - make a half hearted attempt with a bug shield
* windows too bright - add more tint
* intake too restrictive - add anyones FIPK
* not enough power - add s-chip, nox, bigger MAF, y-pipe, free flow cats, free flow mufflers, supercharger, lighter pulleys and wax ... so i've heard

OK, I've run out of mods that the Ford engineers missed and we have to fix. Be sure that your significant other is aware of these Ford problems. Trust me on this - these are problems that just must be taken care of immediatly or some kind of doom will take place.

You forgot:
Suspension not high enough:remove and add lifted pieces at once!!!
Headlights not cool enough:Immediately change to newer 01 Lightning headlights
Gauges are too accurate:remove and replace with white or glowing gauges,or flamed
Grille lets too much light get to the radiator:remove and replace with billet,or speed grille. And don't forget that the Ford emblem "must" have chrome extensions, and or light up with the headlight switch

Wink

I feel better after reading the posts. I can be aware of the possible problems, and be greatful that I have'nt had any. Problems are not standard with Ford trucks. They are standard to the auto industry. We are deffinitely not the only ones. How about all the people that love there Ford trucks? Don't we read about them?
There is always room for inprovement.
Long live F150 Online!!

Like I keep telling people over and over and over. The problems posted here are NOT widespread. They are NOT the norm. The vast majority of us have no or just minor problems with our trucks.

It just seems that way when you read these forums. While there are a large number of posts, just take a look at how few of those posting are actually experiencing the problem.

I had an '87, '97 and now have a '99 and NONE of them have had any major problems. If Fords have the kinds of problems some think they're plagued with, then I should have seen something crop up in at least one of my two last trucks.

I've got a headstart on Murfster's mods. Aftermarket Blaupunkt digital AM/FM/CD was installed by original owner and it will blow you right out of the cab. (Hope it doesn't crack the doors or windows) Didn't get the manual for the Blaupunkt but was able to download the complete thing from their website. I'm studying it and should have it mastered by this time next year.It has the off road package with 17" wheels and HD shocks so that is taken care of also.
I'm going to think like wittom. Not going to look for trouble where there is none. I am taking the truck in for the preventive door crack repair, though, because it looks like not getting it done is just asking for trouble and maybe a big bill.
This is a nice website! There's strength in numbers.

Just make sure you get all that stuff Murfster and 98 said replaced soon
I remember when I first discovered this site after I bought my F. I was really scared for awhile that some of the parts were worn and would break, at the slightest odd noise. LOL That's why they make they volume **** on the stereo though. Your fears will pass in time.

SSSHHHH! Our better halves will hear this and we, as good preventive maintainers, will be in trouble.
Umm...yes! These are definate problems that must be addressed with high performance after market mods! I would hate to think that Ford (and other manufacturers) can make the perfect car. There are always something we should improve on! (OK, well, maybe the Viper, now with ABS, is in that perfect category).

Peace!
