an off-topic question for postal workers
So guys, I have a question that is completely unrelated to our beloved trucks...I'm just at an impasse.
About 8 months ago, my fiance and I bought foreclosed home. Due to whatever circumstances, the previous owner(s) did not forward their mail. After the first two months, I caught our mail carrier while she was passing by. She told us to put a sticker on the box that said our full names and to "forward: Vasquez". That worked for a few days.
Shortly after, in an effort to cut costs, our PO laid off some carriers and they started rotating routes. The problem came back. This may seem petty to some, but we're talking about at least 15 (maybe 20) different names receiving mail here. On any given day, I only sort out 2-5 pieces of mail that don't belong to us. Early this year, it was 10-15 pieces per day. (...you can imagine how many W2's that many people would get!) I lived on my own in rentals for the previous 13 years and never had this problem.
Any postal workers on here have any ideas on how I can stop this? Other than the light annoyance, it just seems wasteful. I talked to my local PO and all they can tell me is:
"Reporting/Returning misdelivered mail
Despite our best efforts, occasionally mail is mis-delivered, or is delivered to an old location for an individual. If you are receiving mail for the previous resident and do not know their address, simply return the mail piece back to the mailstream (by leaving in a Collection Box® or other mail receptacle) with the notation "Not at this address" marked on the envelope."

First class mail should be marked "Not at this address - Return to sender". All other mail can be pitched. If it ever actually does get back to the sender they should remove the address from their records. If you're getting a lot of bulk mail such as catalogs and stuff and you don't want to receive it, call the 800 number in the catalog and ask them to remove the address from their mailing list. I know it sounds like a pain but there really isn't much else you can do, the postal carriers sort by address not name so when it's addressed to your place it comes to your place.
Another option is to remove your mailbox, tell the Post Office you are no longer receiving route mail and get a PO Box.
Good luck!
