On the eastern side of the state there are plenty of then. There are even some hills too! I have not seen western KS, but I am told it is flat as can be and not a tree anywhere.

A lot of the trees in and around where I'm presently living are some of the rattiest trees I have ever seen. Only a true stand tall and true, the rest are either decimated by ice storms of choked by ivy. Either way they usually aren't pretty.

They're certainly importing it from somewhere, hence the outrageous prices. There is no place in Los Angeles you can cut trees for firewood. There's no place you can cut trees period. And certainly not in any of the forests in the mountains north and east of the city, that's all protected land.

Whitt's is one of the few places where there is actually a firewood lot, and it's in West L.A., some of the most expensive land on the planet, so yeah, their overhead plus shipping wood in is going to provide for really high prices.

500 a cord is ridiculous...

we spend 500 on a loggers truck full. That is the stack is roughly 9' wide x 9' high x roughly 20 feet long.... The logs are 20 foot long and about 15'' round... not cut.

We go through 6 of these a year to heat our house with an outdoor woodstove.

This year we had our local logger log our farm and he gave us 12 loads full and sold the good stuff to a mill, we made about 8 grand in mill logs and got free wood for 2 years... we have 20 acres of woods and it worked out great for us.

living in NY, we use a lot of wood, but its still cheaper then fuel oil..

We got a small dump truck of split and cut wood for 50, the load was roughly 10'x8'x3'... we got lazy and did not want to cut it ourselves so it worked out good for us.

If I could pay only $50 for a cord of oak, I would quit cutting and splitting and simply buy.

A buddy of mine put in an air tight and all he burns is knuckles from citrus. Burns hot and lasts long in the air tight. I think he was getting a level 8' bed for like 25 to 50 bucks. A 5gallon bucket lasts all night.

But that is So Cal. stuff like Oak is rare. We burn Eucliptus, burns hot but it's a gum wood so we mix it with Citrus to keep the flue clean.

I don't pay for firewood, I pay for pellets. Cleaner and easier! When we bought the stove everyone around here said "why not just get a wood stove, wood is free?" Where we live there are dozens of places you can get free firewood if you are willing to go get it yourself, including our own 12 acres of trees. However, firewood, no matter if you buy it or go get the stuff yourself, IS NOT FREE!! The cost of the equipment, fuel and time probably equal every bit as much as we pay for our pellets.

Plus poison ivy and little microscopic critters that make you miserable.
