He ended up finding a 1979 with a 351M that he swapped into it.

The 300 I6 is now sitting in his 1990 Jeep YJ, freshly rebuilt and bored 0.030 over.

Once he gets the Jeep up and running again, he plans on rebuilding the 351M.

I plan on getting some. We were short on time Monday, and he said it was too dirty for pictures.

Ford never assigned the name "highboy" to the 1966-1977.5 trucks, this was given to them by the public. Anything after '77.5 is sometimes referred to as "lowboy".

The easiest way to distinguish a "highboy" from a "lowboy" is the divorced transfer case the highboy uses. This transfer case sits off to side unlike a married t-case which is inline and bolted to the trans.

Highboys have 3" wide front springs and 2.25" wide rear springs. Lowboys after 1977.5 have 3" wide front and rear springs.

Typically trucks with VIN's before #Y20001 are highboys, anything after is a lowboys.

Highboys came only with in-cab gas tanks, and optionally, with an
additional side-mounted gas tank, but never with a rear gas tank. A rear
gas tank is too wide to fit between the narrower 33.5-inch-wide rear frame
rails of the unique Highboy frame.

These are just a few quick things to look at, there's a lot more highboy specific stuff than this.

Awesome! I will make sure to remember that. I will pass it on to my buddy too, so that he finally knows what makes a "highboy" as well.

Nice looking 78. I like the front end of the 78 & 79 better instead of the 77 and older. My cousin had a 76 f250 highboy until he rolled it.

I agree, sweet 78. I believe the 77's had that same front end. It was half way thru 78 when Ford changed them again. The 78.5's and 79's had the square or rectangle head lights.

it actually had square sealed beams prior to the resto. But he decided to change them (he says they flow better with the lines of the truck)

Here is a good comparison shot of the beginning (first time he saw it) and how it looks now.

Then it's a 78.5 model. Should of kept the squares or rectangular lights, they look allot better with that front end. The roundies don't flow IMO. Seriously - Still looks good tho, -shiny.
