Dog ramp or step

I am still waiting for my truck to come in, but I've been wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a dog ramp. My Great Dane is still pretty young at a year and a half, but he's definitely going to have hip issues, and already isn't a "jumper."

He's 160 lbs now, but he may still put on a few pounds, so the ramp must hold 200ish. Ideally, I want to be able to get him in the back of the screw when the seats are folded up, as well as in the bed, but I'm not sure if door angles work well for a ramp, or if a step would be tall enough for the bed.

So, how about it? Have you had any good (or bad) experiences with big dogs and ramps/steps?

I had to build my last dog a ramp. Got a 2x12 and used a spare hinge and ramp end I had laying around so I could fold it up and stick it in the back. Although my dog wasn't 160 lbs I'm sure it would've held most any dog as it held me just fine and I'm pushing 200.

A little tip, get some non-slip paint or tape. Wood gets awfully slippery when it's wet and I'd hate for your pup to take a nasty spill.

If you are looking to build your own then you definitely want to make sure you cover the wood so the dog doesn't slip. We offer a ramp mat kit that can be placed on the wood so it prevents slippery surfaces. I included the link below. Good luck and great looking dog!

That's one handsome big fella, right there.

You might want to consider some bike ramps, if he keeps growing.

They make plastic dog ramps that work very well. My buddy has one for his two English Mastiff's. They are both pushing 200 pounds. He isn't very handy so building it wasn't an option.

I had no idea they sold kits for do-it-yourself ramps, that's awesome. I'm not very handy myself, but that looks like a pretty decent way to go.

Thanks for the input!

Haha, thanks. I sent that pic to a friend and she said "It makes him look kinda dopey." I said "Good pic then."
