Motion alarm for the home?

Anyone using any motion detectors with alarms around there house?

I have been looking into some extra security. I think motion detection for outside the house with an alarm in the house would be a good idea. Immediate detection of a possible home envasion.

Motion detectors are a good idea inside the house if you don't have pets. Outside they are useless. You have stray critters, family pets, wild animals, the wind among other things that all will set off your alarms. If you think you won't get many alarms, try installing one of those automatic motion porch lights and see how often it comes on for no good reason.

I have the newer Motion detectors throughout the house. Pets don't set the alarm off

Just don't get DevCon security!! Their service sux!!!!

Had ADT, switched to DevCon, had NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS AND NO HELP!!

Switched back to ADT and no more problems.

Wireless, too.

Motion dectectors, (no probs), fire, flood, lifeline, glass breakage (uh, grinding ice in a blender DOES set off the glass breakage detectors) but happy with ADT.

I have motion detectors inside via security system and my dogs don't set them off. It takes a mass of 50+ pounds to trigger it I believe.

The thing is, I don't want an outside movement to trigger the security system. I just an alert chime or something close to the master bedroom.

My neighbor did that with a motion sensor in his shed. He also put a shut off switch on it inside the house. He doesn't have a light attatched to his, just a buzzer in his bed room.

If you use the porch light type there are adjustments for distance and area covered, they are a PITA to adjust. It's easier with 2 people though.

50 lbs of what? Feathers, leaves, iron, uranium? My point is all have different sizes. A motion detector uses nothing more than some form of wave energy (often sound) to measure the distance from objects to itself, similar to a cop's radar. It has more to do with size than weight. I guess they can be desensitized, but if you get it too desensitized then it will miss the smaller adults or teens. If it is pointed in the direction of a street cars will set it off. I guess if your house is shaped correctly you could always have them pointed toward your house. An L or U shaped house would work to protect the "court yard" area with a motion sensor, but then your sensor is left unprotected, unless you get a cut wire alarm.

Granted my experience with outdoor alarms is in an industrial environment, but we had many, many false alarms due to wind and animals. When we were able have automatic desensitizers installed (takes care of motion on an item due to wind) it cut down on a lot, but we never a motion detector in an open are just covering an open area because they were useless. If they were monitoring an area it was a fence where the fence had to move.

They told me the optional motion detectors i have (recommended for pet owners), wont set the alarm off, and haven't yet. Any pet up to the size of a German Sheppard.
The company I'm with don't even install regular detectors anymore.

^ That sounds about right. I think they told me a 50 pound dog would set it off.

I found something at Home Depot one time that i almost bought. You can buy a motion light for outside and it has a wireless transmitter that plugs into an inside outlet. Just plug a lamp into that and the lamp will come on when the detector is tripped. I am thinking about putting a couple at both my basement doors. Just gives you a little heads up.

Think about that for a second. Your motion detector will not be set off by a German Shepard. I'm going to guess you have some type of alarm on your windows and doors also. It's called a layered system. If all you are doing is placing those same motion detectors on the outside of your house you will be miss many crackheads who are interested in what you have. Many are not that large due to doing drugs rather than eating. That is the problem with having the sensors outside. If you get it desensitized enough to not alarm at every little thing you can miss the smaller *******. If you get it so it will see the smaller criminals you will get a lot of false alarms. Inside and outside are very different situations.

I have a motion detector in my garage and it works great. Outside I think motion lights are the way to go. I saw one at costco awhile back that has a camera built in and saves a few days of video that is downloadable via USB stick. 150 bucks.
