4x4

Looking real hard at a 97 Lariet 4X4, but not sure what to look for with these new electric shift on the fly systems. Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Just make sure it works. Should go into 4-hi while moving and there should be a noticeable change... ie 4x4 is working. To go into 4-lo, you have to stop, put the truck in neutral and hold your foot on the brake before turning the **** to 4-lo. Should be an audible "clunk" as the transfer case engages low. Also, make sure it shifts through all the gears in both low and high range. There should be no popping or rattles when driving straight with 4x4 engaged. If there is, the hubs or gears may have a problem.

As part of the deal, try to get them to change all the fluids... engine oil, coolant, tranny, transfer case, and both differentials.

Depending on the miles and the service record, you might want to think about the tranny fluid change. I have seen many times in the past cars with 80-100K miles getting their first tranny fluid change need a new tranny within 3K miles... Seems if the fluid hasn't ever been changed, the new fluid tends to break loose lot's of "dirt/stuff" that destroys the tranny.........

If it is with a dealer, ask for the service record.

I have a 97 Lariat with shift on the fly switch 4X4, and I have never had one problem out of it so far, and I have happy with that. *S* It works fine for me.
