One Hand on the Steering Wheel

I normally drive with one hand on the steering wheel, the left hand at about 12 o'clock. What would happen in a collision where the driver side air bag deploys? Would the force be enough to break an arm? Has anybody actually experienced this situation?

not shure though. my friend still has a slight mark on her arm where the air bag cover hit her arm.

I used to have an article about right and left handed drivers.... it stated that left-handed drivers were more likely to die in an accident than right-handed drivers. Reason was that when faced with danger, the normal reaction is to lower, not raise the hands... and thus, the left-handed driver would pull the steering wheel down and into oncoming traffic...... who knows what is going to happen about the time the airbag goes off, the impact has already occurred, right?

If I'm not mistaken, police departments advise their officers to place their hands at the 9 and 3 positions because there's less chance of injury from the airbags. I think there was a study that said of your hands were positioned higher, you increase the chance of your hands or wrists being broken.

My normal position is slightly higher than that, but never higher than 10 and 2.

The 'proper' hand positions for an airbag equipped vehicle is 4 & 8 o'clock. Anything higher and they say you can have your wrists injured by the airbag. I still sometimes find myself with one hand @10 and the other @2.

According to KY state drving instructions your hands should be at 10 and 2. Then again it's been that way for as long as I can remember so maybe it should be revised. 4 & 8 seem too low, and could hinder quick wheel movements

Current driver's education program that I used to teach my son indicates a 9 and 3 postion for airbag equipped vehicles. 10&2 allow the elbows, etc. to be impacted by the airbag in deployment. 8 & 4 cause the elbows to "interfere" with the upper body when in a panic situation...... to low!

Cool

I swear I don't know where some of you learned to drive and it's pretty obvious you don't have speed control.
Both my hands are clasped comfortably behind my head. My left foot is at 10 o'clock, toes gripping the wheel firmly but, not tightly.
My right foot is at 3 o'clock except when I change stations on the radio.

The steering wheel is tilted all the way down.
If the air bag ever did go off, it would have to be surgically removed.

HAHA, you must be either 1) very nimble, or 2) very short.

Sometimes I drive with my knee's, but normally use one hand (the right, as in opposite of left) around the 12-3 position. If I'm banging the corners, I'll drive about 1-2 and 9 for the utmost controll.

On my bike, I can ride no hands, its really really cool.

I'm retired after thirty years in the circus and don't like being called 'short' anymore.

Next time I pass you on the road I'm going to have to flip you the toe.

LOL I do the same thing except I just let go of the steering wheel for changing lanes and stuff... I usually drift into other lanes during this
