That is a storage slot built into the mounting adapter. That one looks larger than the one I have - mine is just big enough to put about 5 CDs in (without the cases).

You can actually fit a double-DIN headunit in there with a little modifying.

I'd be happy just to get the old radio out. I have the kit like frostby. My brother had the tool to do it and we tried for about 2 hours at my dads house to get it out. POS won't budge. I stuck the trim back on and have been using the same POS Ford deck. I'm sick of it, I have a real JVC radio and the kit to put it in still in the box 1 year later, and I have a coat hanger now and still can't get the crappy Ford deck out.

Thanks what I have been doing and it doens't work. Why to car companies do all this stupid crap instead of using real radios to begin with? Seriously the JVC I have been trying to put in there for the last year is cheaper and better than the crap Ford has and you can install it like normal without wasting all the dash space an using stupid pieces of bent wire.

Any ideas what is wrong with removing the old deck? I'm about to take my jigsaw out there and remove the stupid Ford garbage. At least Chevy was able to install a radio in a normal fashion without stupid wire tools.

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help. I'll add this to my list of reasons not to buy another Ford

I got it. I started taking the dash out, but after about 12 screwes decided better.

The best way to get these radios out is to pry the face of the factory deck off. New when you do this you are not just removing the plastic face plate you are actually prying the displate, *****, cassette door and everything away from the deck. No biggie though Ford obviouly does not believe Quality is Job 1. There is only 4 thin pieces of plastic that hold all this to the front of the deck. so all you have to do is get a screw driver between it and the matal portion of the deck and gently snap the whole front of the deck off.

Then you can dig the flimsy springy clip out and pull the deck out. After removing it it makes complete sense why the thing wouldn't come out. That is the shoddiest method of installing a radio to begin with. That cheap metall will snap in two easily and you can very easily break it with the DIN tool.

Least the Kit I bought to put the new radio in doesn't rely on flimsy metal. It is good old American plastic. I'm adding a real metal tab to it now and I'm going to tap some holes and add 2 screws to it so I don't have to rely on the plastic clips.

Anyway, anyone having trouble getting their old radio out might consider just removing the front of the old deck to make the job easier. Odds are those flimsy metal tabs or bent of broke and either way it is easier without the face. Of coarse you will ruin the factory garbage.

Speaking of factory decks, I have a radio and CD changer from a Lincoln Navigator in the basement. Anyone interested in purchasing it? BTW, it was removed without tearing the face off.

anyway hope to hear back from you

I Have Some Picture's Of The JVC We Installed In The Summer.

I actually like the pocket Above the Single DIN Cd Player. If Your Head Unit Comes With A Remote, It's a perfect Place To Store It. Mine is angled up just a tad so when I give it some gas I don't have to worry about the control flying out. But Usually You couldn't pry it out of my hand in the first place :-D.

Hope this helps, I've been happy with how it looks. And I like being able to change the color on the HU to match the interior at Day/Night.

HU is "JVC KD-LH910"
