Lumbar question on '99 Lariat SC

The lumbar on my SC has stopped working. Before I dig into it, anyone had one of these apart that can give me an idea of what to expect. **** turn freely so I'm assuming something just plain broke.

A guy I talked to at a seat shop said there is a cable in there attached to the ****. He did mention they were quite easy to work on.

Good luck

lumbar

If you are handy you can fix it cheaply useing a bicycle brake cable or buy a new assembly from ford for about $95.00.

Exclamation

It's pretty sad. I took my seat cover off, and it looks like they are designed to fail They have the cable wearing on a part that WILL cause it to break. It's just a matter of time. I'm buying a used 99 seat for $100, Partially for the working lumbar, but mostly just the pure comfort. It's hard for me to believe that one year to the next the seats would change that much. The 97/98 seats are pretty dismal in my opinion. The 99's are nice!,,,,98

Thumbs down Lumbar support 98 Lariat SC

I'm encouraged to see that there may be hope for the leather slab which substitutes for back support in my 98 Lariat SC. After an hour behind the wheel I'm dead, but playing with all the buttons doesn't seem to cause any lumbar support to happen. Is something broken or is there simply NOT any lumbar adjustment in this high-option seat?
I Don't want to give up the bench because buckets would put my lady way too far away. Is the '99 bench bolt-in, and a real improvement, or is having the seat re-built by a competant trim shop the only solution?
Any aftermarket options (besides the New York taxi beadcushions)?
