Hey guys,
I don't want to rain on your parade but I talked to a guy that makes steel inserts that get installed in these heads. He has alot of experiance with this stuff. When I asked him if ford just did a full thread on the plug would that solve this plug loosening up ?
He said that would help but it's the taper seat on the plug that also causes problems with the loosening.
Don't get me wrong ... this is great that ford finally did something about this problem. But you better be super careful with the torque wrench when installing these plugs because this may not be a 100% fix.
Thanks for the info !

No, between ford and GM he has all the sales he can handle. As a matter of fact.. I wanted to buy a fully threaded insert with a flat washer seat and he talked me out of it. He said you should keep the motor original. This guy actually had integrity... something hard to find now-a-days.
He told me about an older motor that had a similar problem (to few threads and taper seat) and they doubled the amout of thread and still had a problem loosening up over time.
I was on the phone with this guy 30 min. I got an ear-ful ... he loved talking about spark plug threads...You could tell this guy loved his work.
Good luck

I seriously doubt ford just used inserts in the plug holes.
I think we are getting confused here, I didn't say ford installed inserts. I wish they would, I understand the better designed heads have steel inserts to begin with.
When I said "he has all the sales he can handle" , I was talking about all the poorly designed heads in the past.
If your saying the 4.6 has a taper and doesen't blow plugs.
I will remind you that that head has the same amount of threads and doesn't blow plugs either.
I believe the 4.6l has the least blow outs , the 5.4L has more, and the V10 has the most. This leads me to believe the more horse power you have the more vibration, and the more likely a poorly designed 6 threaded plug will work itself loose.
All I'm saying is be careful... maybe have ford do any work on the plugs in your new truck.... keep the documetation on the work they have done... You may need it later.

Ive never heard of one instance of a PI head blowing plugs on a 4.6 whether is was blown or nitrous assisted. The tapers/heads are identical on a 4.6/5.4 PI because they are the same head to begin with, Modular.
However and a 5.4 with even a lower compression ratio, they pop like bad. Im beginning to think its harmonic noise and that is one of the reasons ford went to the caged pulley. Between noise and vibration, its causes the plugs to work loose.

Thats why I'm warning the taper seat plug is not a good design. Even though they increased the number of threads in the head.
