Basic Maintenance

O.K. after reading the fuel filter thread I have to say that with all the mods that nobody has a problem buying(myself included)

You must do at the VERY LEAST basic Maintenance. If you race ,even not that often then you need to do more.

In 20,000 miles I have a lot of 1/4 mile passes but I have changed my fuel filter 5 times, oil 11 times , tranny fluid 4 times and rear end fluid twice.
I check my plugs reguarly and I am always looking for something that I can improve.

Does this mean my motor will not blow up, NO or that I will not throw a plug, again NO but I am doing what I think is right to keep the L running good.

So please before you buy the next mod think about basic maintenace.
I know this does not apply to everybody and a lot of people do way more then me but just something to think about.

rear end fluid.

JK it's called differential fluid. Ours use synthetic from the factory. You can buy it at any parts store or from the dealer. Read Superfords write up on changing out the girdle to get a good idea on how to go about changing it. Great pictures with him wearing rubber gloves....

Vinnie,
Do you change the tranny filter every time you change the fluid or do you just drain and fill it?

Right on Vinnie

Just remember, if you notice a change after a new filter or fluids, then it is probably too late.

Good point Vinnie ! ! !

I change oil and filter every 3000 miles in the engine
Trans fluid with filter and diff fluid every 7000 miles

I go to the track maybe 5 - 6 times a year.

Can't blame him for wearing gloves. That fluid stinks up the whole garage and it is hard to get the smell off your hands. I almost chummed the first time I took a diff cover off to do a set of gears.

Vinnie, I know basic maintenance is important and overdoing it won't hurt anything but.....

I change my oil (10-30 Valv.) every 5000-6000 miles.

In 64,000 have changed the trans. fluid once (when installing the F/T shift kit) at 30,000 miles.

Fuel filter once at 36,000 miles and it was still very easy to blow through.

Changed plugs once in 64,000 when I went from a 2# to a 4# pulley.

Maybe I have just been lucky. I don't go to the track very often (5 or 6 times in 3 1/2 years.

well my oil gets changed atleast every 3 months, I barely put 3000 miles on a year now with how much I drive her.

The fuel filter gets changed once a year now, before every 10,000 miles.

My coolant has been changed out once so far

My tranny is the fourth one in 42,000 miles so I got that pretty much covered with new clutchs and everything, HAHAHAHAHHA. I still try to changed it every year in the winter now.

spark plugs get pulled on my truck probably ever 1000 miles or so, just precaution I guess.

The blower fluid got replaced with the new supercharger about 5,000 miles ago.

The one thing I haven't changed yet is that differential fluid EVER! I know its probably bad that I haven't and I should get that done this winter. Probably going to get the new cover and do it then.

And I do try and get to that blinker fluid on a regular basis!

According to Ford the differential fluid is synthetic and is considered a lifetime fill. So you shouldn't have to change it. And it should be a lifetime fill because the Ford synthetic gear oil from my dealer is $18.00 a quart!!!
