Question Did I blow a plug? How can I tell?

I was driving at about 45mph and 30-40% throttle. At the 2-3 shift the truck shifted really hard and felt like it missed a gear. I didnt hear any particularly unusual sounds aside from a loud shift. The boost dumped and the temp gauge pegged at Hot. The SES light came on and I pulled over. I dont see a fluid leak and so I restarted the truck. At this point, it restarts OK and runs fine. The idle *might* be a little rough but It wasnt exactly silky before. Truck seems to run OK, but the SES light is still on.
Short of dropping my truck at the dealer for a week, how do I know if/what went wrong?

Chip is still firmly seated and the truck isnt making any odd sounds. I dont see anything that looks like an ejected coil pack or plug, but I havent taken the coil packs off to check.

The temp gauge pegging would have me worried...

Did you restart the truck with the hood open?

yes, I restarted the truck with the hood open. Everything *looks* OK. the temp gauge is now acting normally. There's a slight and random miss if you listen by the exhaust pipe, but that's not really new either.

The odometer diagnostic thingy registers the following:
idle 750-800rpm
fuel 182
dt 649F
dtc 9202 (fuel sender open circuit?)
dtcd 262
dtcd 073

With your symptoms, it sounds like something has cuased your truck to go into limp mode. When that happens, you'll get a SES, and the trans will default to full line pressure and not all gears will work. Since your temp gauge pegged, I'd guess that the truck overheated for some reason, which set the failure mode. Our trucks have a unique overheat failure mode that will allow the truck to still run, but will kill cylinders to help keep the motor cooler.

I would get the codes read and then disconnect the battery to clear them and see what happens. Or just pull your chip and see what the dealer has to say. Best of luck to ya. -Mat-

Oh yeah, if you blew a plug you sure as hell would know it!

Blown plug, VERY LOUD, u would know, loose plug kinda like exhaust leak, u would probally still know.

the only other time i saw a temp guage go from normal to pegged is with a bad head gasket, was the truck at normal temp then just go to full??

Like it's been said, if the plug blew you'd know cause there would be an ignition coil displaced and a hole where one of the plugs were.

In addition to Sal's advice I would carefully retorque (not overtorque) all the plugs.

Maybe I should market a CANBUS networked 'Strain Gauge" insert for all the plugs to warn when one is coming loose..... Or you can buy the 8 threaders

Actually, that's exactly what happened. However, it seems to be running ok for now. Seems like a head gasket would have continuous problems. Sal's description of going into limp mode also sounds right. Now I just need to figure out *why*.

Doug, I went to autozone as you suggested and they read the code but said it was a manufacturer specific code so they couldnt diagnose it. Anybody know what P1227 or P1299 means?

so what does it mean?

ok, so it looks like I had an overboost condition and a temperature failsafe (1299 Cylinder Head Overtemperature Protection Active).
What might cause it to hit limp mode? I wasnt driving very hard and only have a 4lb.
