Question about Chip and Engine's Redline

I just ordered a flipchip from JDM (Jeremy = you are the man!) and was told that my chip would raise the shift point of my truck from the factory redline (around 5200) up by another 200 rpms.

Will this higher shift point harm my engine in any way? I also told Jeremy to leave my torque reduction ON. Am I ok, or should I ask for different parameters?


P.S. I ordered a chip, a 2lb, boost bypass, oil breather cap, and will be adding a K&N w/ airbox mod. I will be on new F1's and will be in 60 degree weather. Will I be able to knock off a 12.999? There is an Camaro SS owner I have to put the smack down on!

you should be able to break a 12.999 with those mods.

i hit a 12.97 with a filter, chip, boost bypass, and line mod valve on F1's. so you'll have what i had PLUS the pulley. i'd have to guess you'd break 12's. good luck!

I'd recommend factory shift duration BUT also installing a Factory Tech vavle body.

You'll get varied answers on the Torque Reduction depending on who you ask. According to Gregg it should be left on if I'm not mistaken. I have mine off however.

As for the Redline, this question also gets mixed responses at times. Some think that since the power drops off before 5400 rpms, there's no real need to set it there. Some also believe that a 5400 rpm shift point overspins the blower too much and thus isn't as safe as a lower shift point.

However, I believe for the most part that the tuners set the shifts at about 5400 rpms or so unless asked otherwise. One would assume that this is safe.

Also, you might want to check on how much line pressure was raised. I would recommend firming up your shifts mechanically through a shift kit of some sort (Factory Tech or LFP valvebody, line valve mod, etc). Most recommend that you don't try to attain firmer shifts through raising the line pressure via chip. On mine, it is slightly raised but not to the point where I'm relying on the chip only to firm the shifts up. I use a Factory Tech valvebody for that.

F1's loose there grip after about 3-6,000 miles. I couldnt hook with my bald f1's and myine only have 12,000 miles on them. great chip coice as I chose JDM flip chip also.

You must drive like a bandit! I've got 9k miles and just rotated the tires and they hook alright (for reg. street tires)...

It might be my heavy right foot. I have had it 1 1/2 years put 12,000 miles on it and already need some back tires. but it is lots of fun.

Me, I'm now on my 7th and 8th Chip Program (Diablo Delta)

All have had Torque reduction turned off
All have had 5800 RPM Rev Limiter
All shifted AT A MIN of 5500 (some 5700 RPM)
All had NO Transmission Pressure Change
(Tried it once, banged, I hated it, sent it back the next day)


My current two are the same (now tuned by JLP)
Except a Tiny Bit of Transmission Tweaking (no banging)
I LOVE IT, Johnny's Da Man, I couldn't ask for a better shift.

Oh ya
The Nitrous program shifts @200/300 RPM less to give a little more safety. (You don't want to be juicing it at 5700 RPM on a stock Block)

Dont Worry
The tuners all know where the power starts to fall off,
Remember the last thing you want to do is short shift it and have to build up the power again. Be more concerned on where the RPM's are AFTER THE SHIFT.

My experience is the same--after about 1/2 the tread, the F1s do not grip nearly so well as new. But they are still fantastic tires. Mine are about shot (5/32" left) after only 8,000 miles or so, but most of that tread was lost autocrossing and road racing. I use the stock wheels and tires now for racing only. I'm gonna run them til they are slick, then probably get some new F1's.

I dunno about a 5800 rpm shift point. To me that's asking for trouble, but then again Rob has more ***** than I do.

Look at your dyno sheet. Your truck falls on its face just after 5200. Youre losing time spinning the motor, making no power at the track between shifts, Not to mention placing more stress on the motor when its not necessary.

Unless you have p/p heads and cams, no reason to spin at 5800.

So what's your's at? 5200?
