Sal, you may have broken off the key way on the crank, JMHO....Something screwy must have happened to let it go, as both Randy Haywood and John Mihovetz have NEVER broken a 4.6 or 5.4 crank, and they spin theirs to well over 8500rpms and make well over 1000lbs of torque, etc...They do have some work done to the stock cranks though, lightened, hardened, etc...

You may want to call Randy about his 5.4 cranks he uses on the SSO car before you shell out $2K plus for a modmax crank

Good luck with the rebuild Sal

Actually, this same motor has been in the truck since 01.

As for the crank, the one I had in this motor was the $200 01-up CAST crank, not the $600 F7 forged crank. Nobody knew back then that Ford cheaped out on the crank in 01, but hell, I'd say it's handled big power well for two years .

Sal are you sure the 01 and up 5.4's have cast cranks?? From what I've seen/heard etc, ALL the 5.4 truck motors have the forged crank in them, this is very odd...Did you replace the stock crank with this crank by chance???

Jeff, I think it's been discussed here before. In 01 Ford "supposedly" started using cast cranks in the trucks. Now, list price on an 01-up crank is only $220 compared to $685 for the earlier crank, which we know is forged. So it would make sense that the 01-up crank is cast, because I don't see Ford selling a forged steel crank for $220 . I'll know more when I tear it apart. I talked to Randy Haywood, he runs a deburred and nitrided stock Ford forged crank in his 1600hp motor.

Sal what you are saying makes sense, since that price is similar to the differences in the cast 4.6 and forged 4.6 cranks, hmmm, very odd...You know whats more funny, is if you look at the literature for the 01 Lightnings, it clearly states, "forged steel crankshaft", typical Ford....I wouldn't be surprised though if ford went cheapo and put the cast crank in...I know they started using cast cranks in the late model Navigator motors while the 99 ones have the forged crank... So much for Ford

Bummer it broke, but thank you for continuing to test the limits. I believe Scat has an aftermarket forged crank for the 5.4. Worth a look.

How big a shot?
