Water temp gage tap location?

Where are you guys mounting the sensors for your water temp gages? Is there an easy plug you can just pull, or do you have to tap soemthing?

Look down low on the drivers side of the block towards the rear. On my '01 5.4 Scab there is a pipe plug there you can remove and put a sender in. I forget the size but it was std pipe thread.

If you are quick you can put the sender in without draining the system. (Don't try that on a hot engine under pressure though.)

That's where I installed the sender for my Autometer Phantom mechanical water temp gauge.

Arrow one option

Perfect opportunity to drop in a 170 or 160 stat.

Cool

HI!... This is the most accurate and easiest spot to mount your water temp sender (MECHANICAL). In the ingoing heater hose. From engine to heater core.

HERE's a pic of my set-up :

What makes this more accurate than the plug above the oil filter? I used that plug, and it just seemed a little too easy.

I think Neals set up is best because the temperature of the coolant in the heads is going to be hotter than the coolent in the block, so the coolant comming from the heads will give you a more accurate temperature reading.

So the heater hose is coming right off the coolant that has just passed through the heads?

photo

i have a diagram of how i did the heater core hose here in my photo gallery on f150online, go to photo galleries and look under my name.

The id of the hose is 5/8.

I used a 1/2 tee, to 1/2x5/8 barb fittings. A couple clamps. The senesor usually comes with a 1/2x3/8 bushing then you put the sensor right in there. Then you have to ground the tee so the sensor works. Check my diagram, i made it myself.....hehe
