Sept. issue of Motor Trend very worthwhile

In the September issue of Motor Trend Magazine they do a lengthy section
on American V8 power. Lots of muscle in this issue. They review quite a few vehicles,
among them, a Z06, Saleen S7,Chevy SSR, Mosler MT900S,Cadillac CTS-V.

They also review a Boss 351 V10 Mustang.

Quotes from the Boss article :

- All aluminum DOHC V10, just a touch under 351 cu. in.

- 430 hp and 405 lbft at the rear wheels.

- " You could call it an unfunded research project, which can get
expensive when your on your third T56 manual tranny, fifth clutch, second
nine inch rear axle and third set of tires."

- Chances of this V10 happening...Nil.

In the "Coming Soon" section of this article they review, along with many others,
the Lightning.

Some highlights are :

- Two features that probably won't make it to production are, 6 speed Tremec tranny and 22 inch wheels.

- Tranny used will be the 4R75E auto tranny.

- Price range will be bumped to the mid 30's.

Anyhooo...this would be a good issue to grab if you see it on the news stands.

They are making a Boss Mustang next year to replace the Mach 1. Rumor has it, there will be a 302 in it...hence the Boss 302 name. It's a 4.6 stroked to a 5.0.

Boy will I be a happy camper if the next Gen L is in "only" the mid 30's..............I was afraid of $40K and up, which would definitely put it WAYYYY out of my price range.............mid 30's in about 2 years from now, is by me!!!

They should offer the 6 speed as part of a track performance package, a'la the 350Z. It is already in their parts bin for the Cobra, so the administrative/stocking/ordering costs would be minimal.

'01's wife here.

I doubt you will see the 4R75W as the transmission. This is only an updated version of the 4R70W which in turn is only an updated version of the AODE.

The transmission of choice would most likely be the 5R110 from the diesel engine. No other Ford auto trans will hold up to that kind of torque. Just like the current Lightning runs the diesel version of the 4R100. Also, I doubt that Ford will want their new premier SVT to be running a 4-speed auto trans.

As for the 6-speed, that one is simple to me. Ford builds the Lightning to be a usable truck as well as a fast one. I seriously doubt that a car based 6-speed would hold up to 4800lbs with 500+lb ft of torque towing 5000lbs. There is a reason why the diesels use a ZF transmission........... and it isn't because they have such a nice short shift pattern.

Rumor has it (take it for what it is worth) that the SRT-10 will not have a towing capacity......... or much of a payload one either. Kinda like a real big version of the Syclone.
