What's the best way to break in my new '03L
Hey Guys,
I was wondering what is the best way to break in my new 2003 Shadow Grey Lightning? Should I refrain from stepping on the Throttle to hard? Or can I drive it any way I want right now? I have not gone wide open throttle in the week that I have owned it, but my self control is growing weaker by the minute. I just want to see what this thing can do, but I have been hesitant to try due to the fact I am unsure of what the proper break in procedure is.
It has almost 700 miles on it already because the dealership I bought it at was 400 miles away. Also what mod combo can get me in the 12's the fastest?

Well, youll get a whole load of opinions on this, but heres mine.
Dont keep it at a constand rpm for a long time (which you may have done)
You do want to be a little aggressive on the throttle more so than you would normally just cruising, this should help form the piston seals proper.
Dont WOT for a little while, i would personally wait 1000 miles.
Do an oil change quick, i would do 50 miles and probably like 100-1500 miles and then 3000 and every 3000 after, just to make sure you get any shavings out of there should they exist.
Don't worry about it too much as engines are much different today than they were 15 years ago, the real policy from ford is drive it like you drive it, there is no break in period. Though i wouldn't take this message entirely to heart i would say its pretty decent.
On the other end, i have heard of people take it to the quarter mile with less than 100 miles on it and it still runs strong at like 20-30k. Obviuosly not a good point to tell if the early run did anything but just to give you an idea.

what's with all this change the oil stuff....
If Ford is like Prosche, don't change the oil right away.
the factory stuff has additives to help break inthe engine.
If you buy a Porsche Boxster, the dealership will REFUSE to chang ethe oil for the first 10,000 miles.
the oil that is in there is breaking in the engine.
I wouldn't wait that long on the L, but the normal 1500 miles break in and then every 3000.
IU use Mobil 1 syn, and i change it every 3000 miles.

These are exactly the responses I was hoping for, because there is a drag race competition I was hoping to enter next weekend to find out what kind of times my truck runs. My nearest track is 370 miles away and this drag race is the only race up in my area for the year (that is legal). I kinda gave into my Lightning's requests to unleash its power at a stop light today anyway. I just absolutely love this truck and can't wait to start modding it up.
You guys have any launching techniques? Does holding it at 1000-1200 RPM before punching it make a difference like some posts I read say it does?
Thanks for the responses guys, and 62Lincoln that was a great link. I guess it was a good thing the salesman made me floor it when it only had ten miles on it.
