Looking at a used 2002...

Hi,

My names Patrick, and im debating the purchase of a used 2002 Lightning. I am going to trade in my Jeep Grand Cherokee, lifted 6" with 33's and a bunch of other stuff. I was wondering if i could get some advice from you guys about what i should look for and what i should expect. The lightning is black, with 18000 miles on it. Repod from some guy who went bankrupt. It is sitting on the Ford Dealership and they are offering a warranty up to 36,000 miles. The asking price is 26999, and they have been trying to sell it for a while now.

What should i look for? And is this price reasonable? I really would like a lightning, been a dream car for several years now...but a couple things deter me.

1) cant take it up to Tahoe
2) now ill be afraid to take it places (before, i wasnt afraid to get a ding or two on the jeep)
3) gas.....rhhhmmmmmmmmmmm.....

TIA,
Patrick

Man, I'll sell you a silver 02 with 12000 miles in great condition for 25,000. No way should you pay 27,000 for a 2002. BTW, the offer is serious as I am going to start looking to sell the L. And oh yeah, if you are worried about gas, do not buy one of these trucks

I live in CA and wouldnt want to deal with shipping. You can email me and maybe we can work out a deal, im always open to that. alloy171@ucla.edu

Other than that, i wasnt planning on paying 27k for the lightning to begin with. But i feel more secure buying a car i've seen, test driven, and has a warranty for another two years at least.

Yeah...the plus side is, i have friends who usually drive their SUV's up to tahoe in the winter, so its not that big of a factor. I've been looking around and doing some research, it seems as if lightnings in california are expensive no matter what. Now, i feel like i can talk this dealer down to 25k or less, does that sound reasonable for a 2002 w/ 18k miles on it?

Don't let them fool you into thinking they are giving you a warranty. All Ford factory warranties are trasferrable to 36,000 miles. The price sounds a little high, but if you can get them down to $25,000 it may not be to bad of a deal. The economy is still slow, so take your time and make sure you get the best bang for your buck and good luck with whatever you decide.

autotrader and cars.com should be your new friend. Do not be afraid to ship with the right deal-4DTHNDR(a member here) has a shipping company. Btw-I bought my 2001 L w/6000 miles, chrome rims, and Xenon headlight conversion for 24,000 even last week!! also-peoplefirst.com for killer loan rates!! Mike

a little extra to good advice given

You said guy went bankrupt, so I would be concerned about maintainance being done. Not only do car fax,but equally important check VIN in dealer's computer to see if recommended maint. done., plus any warranty work done. Good luck!

The L's gas mileage shouldn't be much (if any) worse then your Jeep was on 33's. My L gets better gas mileage then my Wrangler ever did! There are lots of things I miss about my Wrangler, but there are lots of things I don't! 450rwtq knocks the wheeling memories out pretty good.
