Lightnings over 100k miles?
well guys, i just read something that wasnt very encouraging... but dont know if I belive it anyway...
this is my first used car to EVER buy... every car I ever bought has been new and I have never even been close to 100k miles.... but I was dead set on a Lighting and couldnt afford $33k
so last week I bought a 2000 Lightning with 66k miles on it for $16,500... i thought it was a deal i couldnt pass up
anyway, my point is i was reading on another site a guy posted something saying how Lightnings dont last over 100k miles.... is this true?? i cant belive that... if so... whats up with the "built ford tough" moto.... i think if ya take car of any car it will be fine for as long as you have it... i mean little things like belts, etc are bound to need replaced.... but saying a $33k truck wont last 100k miles is kinda bold statement to me....

I can't vouch for how long a supercharged motor will last, especially if you mod it and run it hard, but the basic truck will go 100,000 miles without breaking a sweat. I've driven a Ranger and an Explorer to well over 100,000 with no problems. Get under there and look at that frame - it's probably between 1/8 and 3/16 inch thick - it will outlast all of us unless wrecked or crushed. Electronics and accessories will probably be the biggest risk as miles pile up. I wouldn't worry about it.

i'm knocking on 90K miles on my 99.. Drive it everyday back and forth to work since I had it.. The recipe is ,
1)don't beat on the thing all time and stay out the boost
as much as you can..
2) change your fluids on time ( oil, transmission fluid, coolant etc.
3) Keep the intake and fuel system clean
4) change your spark plugs every 10,000 miles
5) talk to your truck.. Tell her how special she is to you
Every truck is different but this is what i've been doing and it seems to work for my baby..
Anything will last as long as you will allow it..

I've got 90K on my 99, and she's been bulletproof until 2 weeks ago when a fuel line popped off one of the fuel pumps. She burns no oil, makes no funny noises, and runs like a scared monkey.
I change the oil every 5K w/ synthetic
I use K&N oil filters
I've had the tranny flushed every 40K,
Run the **** out of her, and she'll love you forever...
My only complaint is the brakes... I've twice gotten into the backing plate on the back edge of the driver's side before the squealers hit the rotors. I think next brake change is gonna include upgraded calipers, if I can afford them!

These trucks are way under engineered from a drive train durability standpoint. The old heads (pre-2003) are prone to shoot plugs and then scrap out motor. The automatic can not stand up to the torque that the motor puts out( fried clutch packs). If you did not get in on the intercooler recall your intercooler may fail.
I am not making this up. I have had all of the above failures in a little over 50,000 miles. If you baby this PERFORMANCE truck it may hold together. I say all of this about a 100% stock truck. If you mod it, good luck. Be prepared for engine upgrade & trans upgrade.
Having said the above I do enjoy driving the truck. I just wish it was a little more heavy duty.
