Officially a beater is anything that is in crap shape...regardless of year of manufacture.
Now a mid-70's 'barge' also qualifies as a 'hooptie'. Used to drive a '79 Lincoln Continental that was light pastel yellow and had a white 'landeau' top - that thing was a chick magnet and was affectionately referred to as the 'Tuna Schooner' by all who rode in it.
