Taking my truck to the dealer...

I was wondering, should I take my truck to the local dealer or should I drive about 30 - 40 mintues to get to a SVT dealer.

All I am going to have them fix is that annoying clunk sound when ever I turn. I really don't like the local dealer, but how can the mess it up?

Buy clunk washers...that's the only REAL fix for it anyway. All Ford will do is:

1. Plead ignorance ("What clunk").

2. If they don't play dumb and acknowledge there really is a "clunk problem," all they'll do is have some bozo get under the truck with a 6' cheater pipe and tighten the crap out of the offending A arm bolt.

3. They may also install the "Ford fix" of the star washer...which plain and simple DON'T WORK, either!

I think you're wasting your time unless you go with the clunk washers.

Never bring your truck to a dealer unless you have no other option.

I would find a local mechanic and have him install the Clunk/Herb washers along with a set of Cam Bolts.
Every L needs a set of Cam Bolts pronto!

I agree with the above regarding the "clunk"..

But if you must go to a dealer, Ive had the best luck going to a lincoln/mercury dealer... They seem to treat vehicles / people better overall..

Could someone then perhaps point me in the right direction of where I can pick up these washers and/or how to install them?

I'm with Dale use a Lincoln Merc dealer if no SVT is available.

I still like the original write up by DHFerguson, it is a step by step write up. I put it on my website in case anyone asks in the future. The page is http://webpages.charter.net/roberts1964/frontendinfo
It's a simple process that anyone can do. Good luck Charlie.

Tried that....

Took my "clunk" to the SVT dealer and laid the case on them. They took it for a test drive and said it did not have any sounds out of the ordinary for a Lightning......oh well, better do it right yourself instead of having the star washer installed.
