EGT probes - expose bead or sheilded?

To those than run EGT gauges, what type of probe are you using?

I finally hooked up the thermocouple to complete my EGT gauge install and it reads way high from what I have heard.

I have alway heard that you will run 800-900 at normal cruise and the danger-zone is 1450-1500.

I installed the exposed bead probe pretty much at the gasket surface of the head (probe inline with the gas flow).

I see 800 at idle, 1050-1200 at normal cruise and I can nearly bury the needle with a part throttle push. The gauge reads up to 1650, and I can see 1550 with very little effort.

I'm thinking that the exposed bead may be too sensitive...

Thoughts?

Herb

Are you talking about EGT? instead of ECT? ECT is Engine Coolant Temp, EGT would be your exhaust gas temp. What is your total timing? 1550 seems very hot. Since our motors retard at WOT they shouldn't reading such a hot reading.
Im not 100% sure but I think operating temp around 800 - 1000 is about right but wouldnt reach over 1300 at WOT.

EGT

Sorry - I did mean EGT - double dummied this morning trying to rush a post while late for work - LOL

I'm not sure on the total timing - I'll need to measure it.

The temps seem REAL hot compared to what I've known of EGTs in the past. The other weird thing is that the exhaust tips are really sooty like an over-rich condition - but the higher temps would tend to indicate an over-lean condition...hmmm

On the probe tip, is the thermo junction exposed (can you see the two welded wires) or is the end of the probe a blunt rounded tube?

The exposed tip will be MUCH more responsive than the shielded junction due to the lower thermal mass. Mine is exposed and I want to ensure that I am comparing apples to apples against the reading others see.

Thanks guys,

Herb

I run a 2 channel EGT one probe on #4 cyl and one on #5 cyl.the most that I have seen is 1400 at wot and I have had plenty of time to look ,at idle I run about 650 to 750 dpending on weither i have the a/c on or not.The way mine works is it is measuring both sensors and the guage idicates the higher of the 2 and it also has a memory feature were i can go back and see the highest either channel has read.Stan

P/S my probes are space 1 inch away form the exhaust port.

I picked up one of those Autometer 2-channel Pyrometer 'black boxes' on eBay a couple of monthes ago. I plan to experiment with it at some point. I like the recall and the alarm trigger capabilities, as well as the 2-channel part. The EGT I am running now is a VDO, so I need to investigate the compatibility with the pyrometer box, or just buy an Autometer EGT gauge and be done with it.

If I'm not mistaken, the Autometer EGT probe (both weld in and clamp on) use a shielded bead TC - that would account for the varience between our numbers.

Looks like I'll be TC shopping soon!!

Thanks,
Herb

Unless you also bought the guage with the box it willnot read correctly.I wanted to use a smaller guage and autometer told me that the 2 ch. guage was calibrated to that box and that is all that will work correctly.STan
