JLP Ram Air = 19.5mpg

If I know I am going to do a milage check I try and go to my regular station and fill at my favorite pump. When I know it is getting close to full I adjust the fill trigger to the first slow fill clicker.
Then I run that tank down and try and repeat the procedure at the same pump using the same nozzle so things are as consistant as I can get it.
Then due the math. I also used my little E- trex GPS to check the accuracy of the odometer. So far it has been correct but if it is off you can figure the correction factor somehow.
My best on the 99 was 17 1/2 in Colorado going over the continetal divide which is 10,500 ft above sea level. It is a tuff climb up hill but it is all down hill ounce you get over the top.
LOL I ounce went over in a 71 VW buss. Had to stop ounce to cool down going up. Comming down the West side I put it in neutral and it headed up past 90MPH Scarred me to death. Lucky the brakes got me back down to 70 and I was able to put it in gear but the engine wouldn't hold it back ether.
The L is much more fun and safer.
Maybe that why I am slow to do mods.
Coming from the world of air cooled VW is a giant step.

My first car was a 1964 VW I got it in 1966...Took my Dad to a meeting in it and dropped him back home...He went in the house and told my sister he thought I would get killed in that car...It scared him...She never told me the story till the day we were burying him...I loved that car just the same and the great gas mileage it gave...
You have a cool VW story there...

Cruisin'
Like Donsbolt said, I spent most of the trip on cruise control. 64mph in the 55 zones and 74 in the 65 zones. 2 of my brothers-in-law got tickets in NC and VA so I was really careful. My usual around town average is 12mpg so it was a great surprise to get 19.5. No stop and go traffic and I was able to maintain a constant speed. I guess the cooler ram air really does make a great difference in the engine performance. Any other northerners making a trip to the Outer Banks of NC, you have to travel the Chesapeake Bay bridge/tunnel at sunset. Truly a thing of beauty!!!

Rick, very interesting observation. I just recently installed the JLP ram air kit myself and although I don't have the numbers to prove it yet, I seemed to notice that I got a couple of extra days driving prior to filling up! I thought it was my imagination so this tankful, I've reset the trip odometer to keep track.
