58k intercooler cleaning

My first ic cleaning at 58k with no mods,

Looks like a bit of teflon gone and quite a bit of oil in the valley.

The cleaning is not going so well after many cans of carb cleaner and a few brake and electric cleaner the ic stilll looks the same.

Any suggestions before i give up and put back together?

Got it soaking in a degreaser now will try again in awhile.

Thanks for any help.

Looked like mine after 20k w/o the PCV setup w/ breather...

You sure that when you're hitting it with the carb cleaner you're not seeing any dirty liquid coming out through it? It's been on there for 58k miles, so that oil is BAKED on... gonna take some work.

Good luck, and a worthwhile investment in time

Try acetone.

LMR2 (John) suggested it when I did mine and it made the crap just flow right off. Mine was about 3 times that dirty with about 36K on the ticker (open element filter, chip & 5# lower) and the acetone cut right through it. Mine to 12 to the chest (12 cans of brake cleaner) and was laughing at me. I then hit it with the acetone and - GAME OVER GRIME!

I kept the IC attached to the midplate and proped the assembly over an open tupperware storage container. I poured the acetone from a small cup (not styrofoam) through the IC fins one section at a time. I kept repeating until the acetone ran clear out the bottom.

WOW - where do you get that stuff?

Check the label carefully - I use Superclear on everything, but the label say not to use on aluminum. I ignored it and cleaned some carb parts on my Jeep - not good. The casted effervesed like crazy and the passage clogged with white scaley crap - new carb fixed it though

BTW this was mine before cleaning...

On the TB, I used some BG Air Intake System Cleaner. I have no idea where to get the stuff though - my neighbor gave it to me.

Works great - gunk just drips off.

Ok, since i'm a Noob L owner, i was wondering, what is the up side to cleaning the Intercooler?

Is it worth the hassle?

How much time does the removal take. I'm tool savvy.

My 99 has 70k on it, and i have no idea if it was ever cleaned.
