I WOULD try a clay bar, might help
i picked up this stuff called Stage One car care from i think sportscarcare.com or something like that. it is a prewash, you spray it on before you wash, let it sit a minute and then rinse and most of the dirt / bird crap just runs off the car. I only use it on heavy dirt and mostly for bird crap. you just spray it directly one, and hit it with the hose and the crap is gone, even if it has been baking for a few days.

The bottle I have now is "Perfect It" Hand Glaze - 05997. I think that the older product used to be called Imperial Hand Glaze, and it was easier to remove.
One word of caution - Hand Glaze also removes wax, so you must rewax the car soon after using it, or hand glaze frequently. (I really need to do this... I can't even find the time to wash the L lately...)
Only other bad thing is I think you have to get a quart of it at a time from a body shop supplier. I don't know if the same quality glaze is available at department stores or auto parts stores.

I would try the Meguires scratch remover as it's fairly safe. If there still appears to be some stain in the clearcoat - as long as the paint is smooth and all the crap gone, I would leave it alone for a few weeks. I've seen various things get on the paint and stain the clearcoat layer at first. Many times they will fade out in a couple of weeks after a good cleaning. I would probably not even wax the area to avoid sealing it off.
